Science is making rapid progress in unlocking Nature’s basic secrets, especially in the area of plants and food-stuffs, which supply more than just nutrients. One promising field is the variety of spices that have been used for centuries to add zest to a wide range of foods. Interestingly, long before the advent of refrigeration it was recognized that herbs and culinary spices could slow food spoilage–natural antimicrobial principles were obviously at work.
Food scientists have become more interested in essential oils and aromatic plants. Recent studies have focused on the effects of spices and associated oils on food-borne organisms in the context of food safety and spoilage. Attempts have been made to identify the active components of essential oils from spices, among them the oil of oregano. Analysis revealed two phenolic compounds, thymol and carvacrol, as primary constituents of oregano extracts, and their antioxidant properties were reported.

Brittany did end her life on November 1st as she felt her health was rapidly declining and she could lose her autonomy about choosing how her physical life would end. It is heart wrenching to think what her and her family have been through during her illness. There were and I’m sure will be some amazing life lessons learned through it all, though.
One reason I talked about Brittany was because I was curious about the cause of her illness. I will explore some more thoughts on that soon. One thing that I heard about recently that shocked me was about a parasite that racoons can transmit. I’ve had many many encounters with coons as they live in the trees in our yard. Our puppy has changed their habits some but they are still here. Mummy Funny Ear (She has one ear that is not quite as erect as the other and has brought her babies to show me, hence the name.) lives up the big cedar right in the middle of our yard and is a sweet shy little lady. I have had encounters in the past with ‘chicken eaters’…yes they stole our chickens but again our fault, they were just trying to survive. So I actually like the little critters and enjoy their antics but knowing what I know now, I don’t encourage them. Like I said, I’ll talk more about this parasite this week but just be aware that this can be deadly although it is rare. So if there are coon feces (they use specially designated latrines) in your area, make sure you don’t touch them or let your children or pets get into them. These parasites can cause terrible devastation to the brain. They don’t seem to impact the coons but other animals and humans can fall victim. It is RARE but certainly something to be aware of. I’m not saying that this is what happened to Brittany at all but it is an example of a parasite causing brain deterioration.
I did have some people comment on my blog with thoughts like what about EMFs etc. All a possibility as a cause, but can’t be sure. More later…
A blog caught my attention about 29 year old Brittany and her ordeal with brain cancer. She has chosen to end her life on November 1st through assisted suicide. She is adamant that it isn’t suicide as the cancer will take her anyway in a cruel way. This is the last bit of control she has over the disease…how it will end and she has chosen a peaceful way to go as opposed to a horrific debilitating journey to the end of her physical life. She moved from California to Oregon because the laws are in her favour in Oregon. In California she would have had no choice but to die in a nasty way. When a person is suicidal they are usually clinically depressed and they see no other way out. She on the other hand, wants to live but knows that the cancer is incurable and also knows how the final weeks will be. She knows her prognosis and the signs that she is approaching the point when the quality of her life will decline rapidly. She has chosen not to go through that herself or to put her family through the ordeal. Right or wrong depends on your belief system. For her, she obviously hasn’t taken this decision lightly and hopefully this is the right choice for her. I prefer not to pass judgement as one can only know how a person in this position feels if you have been there yourself. My heart goes out to her and her family as they go through this incredibly trying process.
I always like to know ‘Why’? I probably drove my parents crazy. So as I thought about Brittany’s plight, I got to wondering that very question. Not from a standpoint of why her per se but from the point of what would cause this physically. I wondered if parasites could be part of it. I did some research and found a little bit of info but not much supporting that idea for the type of brain cancer she has (gliablastoma) but I did find some info about the possible connection to a virus (I believe related to herpes) and even to malaria. So I thought about the fact that she had traveled widely and wondered if she could have come into contact with something during her travels. This post today isn’t about pinning down the exact cause as I think there are multiple reasons for some cancers to develop. We do know that infections like staph and strep can be involved in many types of cancer. After all, staph is commonly behind cysts, carbuncles, boils and tumours. Often there will be multiple infections and there may be fungus or parasites involved too. Viruses can get in on the fun as the person progresses in the disease. So don’t take lightly that cyst that can turn into something more.
I don’t have cancer and hopefully never will. However, I could have gone down that road. When I was 7, I was in hospital ( a great place to get infections) for tests and when I came out I remember this awful huge boil on my leg. That was the start of my fun with staph infection. What followed was a roller coaster ride of staph infestations. Well really it was the same infection that would go and hide and then come out to play periodically. I had sties (eyes) from time to time. When I was 9 or 10 I developed a mass of horrid weeping sores on my butt. I spent the summer laying on my stomach. In my early teens I had impetigo (staph) which is quite contagious. In a town of 2000, I was the only one with it so I assume it was my reoccurring staph again. Also, in my teens I had pimples that I was told were acne but it didn’t look like other people’s acne. Again staph. As I got into university years I would get horrific colds and huge swollen lymph glands in my neck…staph. Around that time I would get this strange thought that would go through my head…Hodgkin’s, Hodgkin’s, Hodgkin’s. I didn’t really even know what that was at the time but it’s lymphoma. I didn’t know I had a staph infection during all this. At the time I didn’t even relate it all. It was much later that I figured it all out.
So eventually I met my husband. In the next few years he embarked on learning the system of CRA (Contact Reflex Analysis). I was tested regularly and lo and behold, one day staph showed up. Hmmmmm… So I went on a program to eradicate in. It took about 3 months with a product to boost my thymus (immune) and another one to clean up the wastes. If you don’t clean up the die off from the bacteria, if can recirculate and reinfect you. After that I never had any of those staph like symptoms again. Thankfully, knowing what I know now! I’m telling you this today so you can see how something that seems so minor like a boil, can mushroom into possibly cancer. Would it have? I don’t know but my intuition says yes.
So I’m just sharing this so you can be aware and hopefully be more observant of some of your own tendencies or your children’s and prevent a problem in the future.

First of all here’s what The American Cancer Society says…
Cancer is caused by changes in a cell’s DNA-its genetic “blueprint.” Some of these changes may be inherited from our parents, while others may be caused by outside exposures, which are often referred to as environmental factors. Environmental factors can include a wide-range of exposures, such as the following:
Poor nutrition, tobacco use, physical activity, ultraviolet light, radon gas, infectious agents like bacteria, fungus and parasites, chemotherapy, radiation, immune system-suppressing drugs …interesting that they don’t come right out and say that cancer treatment can cause cancer:(, chemicals, solvents, sprays, cleansers, vapors, air quality, herbicides, pesticides, paint vapors, gasoline, other chemicals, xenohormones or estrogens in water, herbicides, pesticides, and toxic air.
Substances and exposures that can lead to cancer are called carcinogens. Some carcinogens do not affect your DNA directly, but lead to cancer in other ways.
Carcinogens do not cause cancer in every case, all the time. Substances labeled as carcinogens may have different levels of cancer-causing potential. Some may cause cancer only after prolonged, high levels of exposure. And for any particular person, the risk of developing cancer depends on many factors, including how they are exposed to a carcinogen, the length and intensity of the exposure, and the person’s genetic makeup.
In October there is a lot of attention on breast cancer. Cancer plays a role in the lives of most people, either directly or indirectly. So why is breast cancer, in particular so prolific. In the US alone, breast cancer takes the lives of 45,000 women a year. Many in the prime of life! 95% of all breast cancer cases are caused by excess estrogen. So we will be looking at managing estrogen here and to manage your estrogen levels you need to understand the principles of apoptosis (limited cell life) and liver health. The liver is responsible for clearing excessive estrogen from your body so adapting habits that keep it healthy is a must.
Iodine (which most of you know is extremely important to thyroid health) is antagonized by three halides (bromine, fluorine, chlorine). All of these deplete your iodine sources. Iodine is not only needed for thyroid health, but it assists in proper colon function and reduces liver stress thus allowing it to function better and eliminate excess estrogen more efficiently.
Where do we find halides? Municipal drinking water, bakery products (after 1960, bromine was substituted for iodine due to misinformation about iodine), Gatorade and other sports drinks, some water purifiers so be careful what you buy, medications, pesticides (methylbromide used on foods such as strawberries), pools, hot tubs, car interiors (Love that new car smell!!), flouride toothpaste. Years ago, it was found that estrogen added to cancer cells caused the cancers to grow like wild fire. (Hmmm…is that why in their infinite wisdom, the medical world was promoting estrogen replacement? What do you think is happening to the water? Yep…toxins from the heated plastic are going into the water. Also, think about cosmetics…full of chemicals. Find a company that produces natural cosmetics. Take a further look into the sources of these chemicals and how they get into our food and water supply so you can be more savvy. So what have we learned here? First of all avoid halides as much as possible. Not only will it help prevent cancer but it will help to keep your thyroid gland functioning normally. I call the thyroid your ‘happy’ gland. A great way to become depressed and end up on anti-depressants is to let your thyroid go without the support it needs. What I do is take some Iodine every day, not only for my thyroid but for prevention of cancer. Biotics make it in 2 forms one in a tablet form and one liquid.

So I know that you are thinking, ‘How can I avoid halides when they are in my drinking water and I can’t drink bottled water’. Get a decent filter for your house and take your own water with you in a non-plastic container. We have a Kangen machine but they are $4000 approx. You can buy them on a payment plan so that might work for you. If you can’t afford one of these types of machines, Santevia filters are reasonable. It’s better than drinking from the tap and consider that reverse osmosis and distilled water are pretty much devoid of minerals and that’s no good either. We hydrate from minerals. So if you drink water that is devoid of minerals, you will deplete your minerals. You don’t want to do that considering our food is already pathetically low in minerals these days. Modern farming practices have seen to that. A hundred years or so ago 1 apple had almost 1/2 the daily recommended iron. Now…you have to eat 26 apples to get the same amount. Shocking!! So basically eat a healthy organic diet as much as possible. We tend toward the vegetable based paleo diet and I’m not talking about vegetarianism here. Use the 80/20 rule so you don’t get too stressed out over things. We still have to have some fun! Avoid halides, get an iodine supplement, and support your liver. Another good thing to do is use a mineral supplement. And don’t get some cheap brand. Get a nutraceutical brand like Biotics Research – Multi Mins, Standard Process – All Organic Trace Mins or Nutri West – Trace Min +. These need to be purchased through health care practitioners and there’s a reason for that. These are high quality supplements designed to treat conditions so the products need to be really high quality and properly formulated. We mostly use Biotics. If you get cheap mins, you can’t absorb a lot of them and they can deposit where you don’t want them and cause issues. I recommend using nutraceuticals for any supplement you take.
Another really great thing to use for many reasons is Vitamin D as it is commonly deficient for reasons such as avoiding sunshine, sun screen, where you live and your age. Adequate vitamin D improves apoptosis. So when there is lots of sun, you may be able to get away without a supplement but people with darker skin may tend to have lower D levels so may consider supplementing always. We generally use Biotics Bio D Mulsion but there are other nutraceutical companies with Vitamin D products.
For liver support…Phosphatidylcholine (Biotics). This may also enhance gut function, adrenal efficiency, neurological capabilities and short term memory.
In Japan the average daily intake of iodine is 13.8 mg. The US RDA is 150 mcg. Japan has lower incidence of breast cancer, hypothyroid and feminizing cancers. Iodine deficiency is the main predisposing factor for breast cancer and fibrocystic disease. Women share their iodine with thyroid, breasts and ovaries. Before 1960, risk for breast cancer was 1:20. After 1960, iodine in bread was replaced with bromide. Breast cancer is now 1:8 and rising at 1% per year.

RELATIONSHIP OF VITAMINS D AND F, WITH CALCIUM
MAJOR INVOLVEMENT: Calcium transport from the Gastro-Intestinal tract to the bloodstream.
MAJOR CONDITIONS: Rickets, calcium assimilation problems, nose bleeds, haemorrhage, delayed healing, lack of exposure to sun, hypo-tension (low blood pressure) and low blood and tissue calcium.
The issues behind the above vitamins and mineral are largely misunderstood.
We know that very few people need Vitamin D in the form of a supplement as the ultraviolet rays from the sun convert skin oil to Vitamin D. Vitamin D picks up calcium from the gut and puts it into your blood. So, as long as you have some sun exposure, you will produce Vitamin D. That’s the first part of understanding these essential nutrients. The second part of the equation is found in Vitamin F, today known as Essential Fatty Acid (EFA). EFAs take calcium from the blood and put it into the tissues. Essential Fatty Acids are mainly found in oils. If deficient in these oils, calcium will not be delivered to the tissues.
So, Vitamin D takes the blood from the gut to the blood steam and EFAs take it to the tissues. Tissues include organs and not just your skin.
A person chronically low in EFAs, may experience sunstroke. Sunstroke involves high blood calcium levels with low tissue calcium levels. Excess Vitamin D from extreme exposure to the sun is known to cause cancer. You might have read articles that say you should stay out of the sun, that sunshine is hazardous to health. Well, it’s only dangerous to people who are EFA deficient. The Vitamin F part of EFA is the polyunsaturated fatty acid found in meats and butter as examples. It is not found in vegetable oil. And by the way, margarine is a phony food. It starts as good oil, but when hydrogenation is introduced it is converted into stearic acid, which is a hard saturated fat. (Hmmm, hardening of the arteries?)
Calcium is a salt mineral with two positive charges. It is a major factor in skin health. Its presence in our skin protects us from outside contaminants such as bacteria, fungus, parasites and viruses. Low “tissue” calcium levels in skin can result in intense ITCHING. This can increase to HIVES, CANKER SORES, COLD SORES (really a hot sore) , and if you have the HERPES virus (as 98.9% of the North American population has) mucous tissues in the lips or genital and anal area can develop painful WELTS OR BLISTERS. Calcium is the 5th most abundant element in the earth’s crust and biosphere and is essential to all earth life forms. The late Paleolithic Period of 35,000 to 10,000 years ago was the most recent time our human forebearers lived in the bios for which they had been bio-chemically designed. The agricultural revolution occurred 10,000 years ago reducing the wide variety of wild foods in the human food chain. This change spread universally and forever decreased man’s dietary intake of minerals, trace minerals and rare earth minerals. In the 20th century adults have only 1/3rd this calcium intake.
There are no less than 147 deficiency diseases attributed to calcium imbalances. Some include osteoporosis, receding gums, arthritis, high blood pressure, insomnia, cramps, twitches, PMS, Bell’s Palsy and panic attacks. Bone spurs and calcium deposits at the sites of insertion of tendons and ligaments (bursitis, tendonitis, myofascitis (fibromyalgia) are a result of calcium deficiency in trauma areas.
Calcium also is required for the release of energy from ATP for muscles to contract. It aids in blood clotting, mediates the transport function of cell membranes to send thoughts and actions and mediates the synthesis of hormones.
Calcium deficiencies can come from a diet high in phytates found in the stems of many plants such as oatmeal and whole wheat. Oxalic acids found in cooked rhubarb, spinach, tomatoes and fruits (such as pies), peanuts, pop, deli meats and processed foods (ask us for a chart) binds with calcium to form an insoluble sludge, calcium oxalate which can lead to gout, arthritis and stones. Pharmaceutical drugs such as diuretics result in decreased absorption of calcium. Excess of caffeine can leach calcium from the bones.
Sufficient acid in our stomach sets up calcium absorption. This acid is developed from salt in our diet. A diet low in salt will result in less acid. Less acid, less calcium absorption equals lactose intolerance all the way to celiac disease.
It was the medical profession 50 years ago that said to reduce salt and fat intake. They neglected to inform the public of what kind of salt and fat (in reality, the food conglomerates gave them limited information). We listened; they were ‘our’ doctors after all. But, they were never trained in nutrition, only pharmacology. It was the food industry that influenced the medical profession to become their spoke-persons for marketing programs and the concept that you can get all your requirements from the four food groups. Even so, the food conglomerates still take away and then add artificial vitamins and minerals to warehouse foods. Even present day baby formulas have much less supplements in them than dog food!
Reduction of salt in the diet leads to loss of calcium and increase in blood pressure to compensate = HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE.
Reduction of fat in the diet leads to loss of insulation and dehydration occurs. In the brain, this is called Alzheimers. We didn’t see this terrible condition until the phase of low-fat diets. We need the good fats. Notice how the companies are quick to say they have reduced their bad fats in warehouse foods (packaged)? And what are these fats called? Yes, trans fats. Are you starting to see the bigger picture?

What is sciatica? Here’s the stock answer…
The main nerve traveling down the leg is the sciatic nerve. Pain associated with the sciatic nerve usually originates higher along the spinal cord when nerve roots become compressed or damaged from narrowing of the vertebral column or from a slipped disk. Symptoms can include tingling, numbness, or pain, which radiates to the buttocks legs and feet. BUT what if it isn’t from the spine??? Read on…
Anyone who’s had sciatica knows that it isn’t a little problem. It can be horribly painful and make it difficult to get around and to sleep! What you probably don’t know is that there are different causes of sciatica. As mentioned, sometimes it’s positional. For example, you are out of place possibly in the low back/hip or there are disc issues and pressure is put on the large sciatic nerve. It is a large nerve in circumference so that’s part of the reason the pain is so great. So seeing a chiropractor might help but if it doesn’t, then you may have another reason for the sciatica to be present. If it’s a disc issue, there are possible ways to rehab the disc but not all chiropractors do this. You may need to seek out a Pettibon trained chiropractor. I’m sure there are others out there who specialize in this area too.
The other cause can be a chemicals built up in the nerve or acids like lactic acid. We often see this as a cause and we must use a high dose of nutraceutical Thiamine (B1) to get rid of it. There is a specific way this is done once we know that this is the root cause of the sciatica.
Other possibilities are poor carbohydrate metabolism and dehydration but as I said, we mostly see the acid build up or a positional issue. So there is hope but typically the chemical/acid problem is not addressed and people go on suffering without an answer in sight.
