Calcium Prevents Osteoporosis But Can You Absorb It?

calciumCalcium prevents osteoporosis! So let’s all take more calcium, right? Not necessarily. We can ingest calcium but if we don’t have the synergistic factors for absorption and digestion it can cause more harm than good.

How can too much calcium cause harm? First let’s remember if you don’t have the proper pH in your stomach, it doesn’t matter what form of calcium you take it’s not going to be fully utilized. Minerals must be cleaved from their substrate, ionized and then attached to amino acids for transport and absorption. Hydrochloric acid decreases as we age, subsequently osteoporosis is more prevalent as we age due to the lack of all minerals not just calcium. More and more clinicians are discovering that “over the counter” and prescription antacids as well as stomach acid blocking agents are creating serious problems. By decreasing physiologic levels of hydrochloric acid, the mineral availability of our already mineral depleted diets is further compromised.

What happens when we get too much calcium or calcium in an unusable form? Calcium abnormalities show up as bone spurs, kidney stones, and calcium deposits on mammograms and heart scans. The lack of proper absorption of calcium can cause calcium deposits which are related to osteoporosis, heart disease and heart attack. Remember too much calcium can push out or displace other minerals like magnesium and potassium which are two essential minerals for heart health.

Commonly, white specks on finger nails are considered to be “zinc deficiency” spots. I think they are indicative of a general malabsorption of minerals. A veteran nutritionist at Biotics Research shared that she had numerous specks on her nails for years despite zinc supplementation. She also had calcium deposits on her knuckles but found that when the calcium deposits were eliminated all the white specks on her nails disappeared She also saw this pattern with her patients as she changed people’s diets and fixed digestion.  She came to this conclusion by accident many years ago when she first noticed calcium deposits on several of her knuckles. They not only hurt but were unsightly. She also had a mammogram which revealed numerous calcium deposits. She had always had digestive problems including heartburn, hiatal hernia, and lack of hydrochloric acid in her stomach. She started taking Hydro-Zyme, a HCL supplement. Hydro-Zyme contains 2 mg vitamin B6, 150 mg Betaine Hydrochloride, 10 mg Pancreatin 4x (from porcine), 10 mg Pepsin, 50 mg Glutamic Acid and 35 mg Ammonium Chloride.

She also added Betaine Plus HP, a high potency hydrochloric acid supplement, to correct her heart burn, and other digestive and absorption problems. Within approximately 6 months all the calcium deposits on her fingers were gone. She’s never had them since. That’s amazing!

She continues to take a small dose of Hydro-Zyme, 1 with each meal and large doses of the Betaine Plus HP, 4-6 per meal. Her digestive issues are corrected and her nails are stronger and grow faster with no “zinc spots.”

She also spoke about her son-in-law “Bob,” and his family history of kidney stones. Each of the six members of his family had gone through numerous painful episodes. After he experienced three bouts with kidney stones within a year, he decided to try to do something about the calcium utilization problem. By taking 2 Hydro-Zyme with each meal, the kidney stone formation stopped and he has been pain free for over three years. Due to the kidney stones and white spots on his nails, my associate encouraged Bob to get a heart scan. His cardiologist was amazed to see calcium deposits on someone only 34 years of age.

So what are the causes? The major causes of poor calcium utilization are: drinking carbonated beverages (also one of the major causes of obesity), a lack of hydrochloric acid in the stomach and antacid use. In fact it is EXTREMELY rare to have too much acid…it just feels like too much acid when it really is too little. See our website for a video on GERD or Acid Reflux.

No wonder we have a calcium problem with all the antacids and acid blockers prescribed and taken by a majority of people. The body is trying to tell us something when we get indigestion, poor growth of hair and nails, and certainly as things like bone spurs, kidney stones or calcium deposits are detected.

We need to listen to what our bodies are trying to tell us. Why wait for something serious to develop. Pay attention to the signs early; make a habit of looking at your nails. Do they have spots, do they crack and peel? Do you have calcium deposits around your joints? Many of you are taking calcium, that’s a good thing. Now let’s make sure you have all the correct co-factors and digestive ability to utilize it. As in many conditions, we see the need for adequate levels of hydrochloric acid.

Reduce Kidney Stones By 92.3%

Kidney StoneOn a late night talk show, William Shatner said he always thought of himself as a “macho” guy but passing a kidney stone was a pain that he never could have imagined. As the pain began, at first he said “a little gas. No problem. I can handle this.” Then it turned into EEE-YIKES! So kidney stones can be a nightmare even for Captain Kirk.

It’s well known, a body chemistry that produces one kidney stone is at high risk for producing more. But the truth is that kidney stones, once diagnosed, can be almost 100 % preventable. Don’t look at me so funny. I’m quoting the infamous Jonathon Wright M.D. Harvard graduate, who over three decades practically invented the modern science of applied nutritional biochemistry. Some people with kidney stones who continue to be at risk think they have to avoid calcium and excessive vitamin C and all kinds of side tangents as they blindly try to prevent the painful exodus of kidney stones.

You may know, minerals have a balancing effect. Much like zinc displaces copper and selenium displaces mercury; calcium is also displaceable. Maybe a better word is mobilized. According to Dr. David Watts who holds degrees in biochemistry and chiropractic, the author of the book “Trace Elements and other Essential Nutrients,” the factors that mobilize calcium are the following: vitamins B6, B3, vitamins A and E, and the minerals magnesium, phosphorous, sodium, zinc, molybdenum, and potassium. This means that if there is a deficiency of any of these minerals, calcium will tend to build up or accumulate. I like the word picture of a teeter totter. If one end is low (trace minerals) the other end (calcium) will be elevated.

Remember just because we have calcium, that doesn’t mean it will end up in our bones. It’s no secret how deficient the American diet is in trace minerals. We could assume that if we increased our levels of the nutrients that displace calcium, we would have the miracle kidney stone formula and everyone would live happy ever after. Well, what does the research say?

In 1974, two Harvard researchers found that magnesium oxide (300 mg daily) and vitamin B6 (10 mg daily) could reduce the risk of recurrent calcium oxalate stones by 92.3 %. 92.3%! Their research was published in the Journal of Urology. Harvard? Journal of Urology? What more could an urologist ask for when it comes to research? I don’t get it. A strategy that offers a 92.3% effectiveness rate, it costs pennies a day and can save hours of pain and suffering, yet nobody ever talks about it. (I think we know the answer here–it only costs pennies a day so the big pharmas don’t like that.)

To get these amounts of magnesium and B6, we can depend on Mg-Zyme and B6 Phosphate by Biotics Research. Mg-Zyme contains magnesium aspartate, gluconate, & glycinate. These forms are more bio available than the oxide form used back in 1974. B6 Phosphate is 20 mg of the phosphoralated form of B6 and is more bio-available as well. We can also get similar products from Standard Process.

Another landmark prevention study was conducted in 1991, this time by the British Journal of Urology. It was a five year prevention study using 10 grams of rice bran after meals twice per day. 10 grams is less a tablespoon. The incidence of new calcium oxalate kidney stones dropped to 83.4%. This is a stunning result. 83.4 % from a few teaspoons of fiber yet I have never heard of one single urologist alerting their patients to this method of prevention.

Along with the above principles of using magnesium and B6, Dr. Mae Beth Lindstrom from Minnesota, shared this protocol when her patients are in acute kidney stone pain. She uses a liquid form of magnesium chloride called Aqua Mag-Cl: 1 tsp every minute for acute pain and increasing the time to 5-10 minutes when pain is reduced. When the patient is out of pain, decrease the dose to 1 tsp every 2-3 hours (or 3-6 times per day).

You know when you have too much magnesium because magnesium draws water to the bowel and will cause diarrhea. A good clean out is not a bad thing, but we want to walk that fine line of a loose but formed stool. The taste is definitely salty as the name implies. In this case, mix with lemon or lime juice which has some anti-kidney stone properties. If the taste is too salty, use organic tangerine or pear juice. The final component in Dr. Lindstom’s program is Phosphatidylcholine: 2 capsules three times per day.

Let’s go back to Dr. Watts’s list of elements that displace calcium. Phosphorus was one of them. So the phosphorus will help with the calcium. This particular form of choline is very beneficial for cell membranes and will protect the cell in the kidney and assist stones to slip out a little easier if things get to that point. Hopefully you can address the problems earlier and be on a preventative dose of magnesium, B6, and rice bran.

Also, you may want to consider using Nephra-Zyme. It has the B6, magnesium, and vitamin A. It also has botanical agents to protect the kidney from oxidation. It neutralizes the free radicals that are present as detox pathways unload toxins. And remember using a high quality multivitamin like ProMulti-Plus will provide all the cofactors needed to mobilize calcium and get it into the bones where it is best stored. Below is the protocol we use in our office.

If you would like to order, let us know. These products are available through health care practitioners only. Do not buy from online companies as they are selling improperly and you may be getting out dated products or even fakes. Biotics tested some random samples from online companies and this was what they found. Sad but true and it’s odd that they are able to sell below cost. That just makes no sense if they are selling you the real thing. We have had a few cases now where people have bought products from these online companies only to complain to us that they weren’t getting better so we have now put our foot down and require anyone consulting with us to purchase through us so we know they are getting the proper nutritional products. It’s for both our safety and the clients.  Here’s what Biotics have to say about it. The Dangers of Discount Store Supplements

Day Light Savings Can be Detrimental to Your Health

spring forwardI was just noticing that daylight savings is already upon us. As much as we all welcome having longer days as it heralds in the spring and summer, there are some concerns you should be aware of.

Dr. Mercola has posted a very interesting article about this that I really felt I should share with you. I posted the link on our Face Book page.

Basically, the stats are that there are more heart attacks, suicides and car accidents on the Monday/week following DLT. There is also less productivity. Go to our Face Book page and follow the link to Dr. Mercola’s story and video. It’s very interesting. If you like what you see, ‘Like’ us:

Actually you probably won’t like what you hear about this phenomenon but there are some things that you can do to safe guard.

Safe Guards for the Spring-Forward

University of Alabama Associate Professor Martin Young suggests the following natural strategies to help your body resync after the time change:

1. Wake up 30 minutes earlier on Saturday and Sunday, to minimize the impact of getting up earlier on Monday morning (Your kidding, right? No, I’m kidding…it’s only ½ an hour and it will really help.)

2. Eat a nutritious breakfast (not cold cereal- Chuck that stuff out!) See NIN attachment for my nutrition book-a gift:)

3. Go outside in the sunlight in the early morning (raise your palms up to the light to absorb it well-they are your solar panels.)

4. Exercise in the mornings over the weekend, in accordance with your overall level of health and fitness (walking is good)

5. Consider setting your clock ahead on Friday evening, allowing an extra day to adjust over the weekend (just make sure you don’t show up for you appointments late. LOL)

In addition:

Pay attention to your diet, making sure you are consuming plenty of fresh, whole foods, preferably organic, and minimal amounts of processed foods and fast foods; keep your sugar consumption very low, especially fructose. Use good fats like coconut oil, red palm oil, olive oil or organic butter.

Practice good sleep hygiene, including sleeping in complete darkness, checking your bedroom for EMFs, and keeping your bedroom temperature no higher than 70 degrees. See the attachment about the underlying causes of sleep loss. We have EMF protectors available if you think you need them too.

Optimize your vitamin D levels. We use Biotics Research Bio D Mulsion Forte.

Manage your stress with whatever stress-busting techniques work for you. We have a stress test to determine your stressor type if you need help with this.

Consider supplementing with melatonin if you have trouble sleeping. We can get Insomnia HP (homeopathic drops) from Dr. Clarke at BioActives or VHP (valerian, hops, passion flower) from Biotics as some people feel hung over using Melatonin.

Declining Eye Health-What Can You Do?

FOCUS ON EYE HEALTH
Your Eyes are the “Gateway to Your Soul” Good eye health and eye care are crucial to preserving your vision, treating eye problems early, and protecting your overall health. Your eyes are the “gateway to your soul,” and they can also reveal common or serious health problems — such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and HIV. 1Vision Problems Rising Rapidly in the U.S.“The increasing diabetes prevalence in the U.S. is leading to more vision loss,” says researcher David S. Friedman, MD, PhD, MPH. He is the director of the Dana Center for Preventive Ophthalmology at the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute and Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore. “We have to recognize that this is a large public health problem so we can start developing methods to deal with it.”The findings appear in the Dec. 12, 2012 issue of the Journal of American Medical Association.

What can we do together?

Nutraceutical products that support eye health

Eat right to protect your sight. You’ve heard carrots are good for your eyes. But eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, particularly dark leafy greens such as spinach, kale, or collard greens is important for keeping your eyes healthy, too. Research has also shown there are eye health benefits from eating fish high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, tuna, and halibut. Consider Organic Red Palm oil. We give it to our parrots too. It has lots of betacarotene as well as being a good fat.

World War II

Bilberry jam was consumed by the British Royal Air force (RAF) pilots to improve their night vision.

Sunshine & Vit. D

Recent literature suggests vitamin D deficiency is widespread, especially during winter months in cold climates. Research suggests vitamin D is associated with a lower risk of macular degeneration. We recommend supplementing with Bio D Mulsion from Biotics (available in Canada in 400 IU and 1000 IU and in the US in 2000 IU) especially in areas like Canada, Northern US and other parts of the world where sunlight is limited for a great deal of the year. Supplementatioon should not be necessary during July and August. Also, keep in mind that we absorb the light through the palms of our hands and soles of our feet (they are our solar panels) so for 3 minutes a day go outside and hold your palms up to the light.
