Why Test for Heavy Metals?

First of all, how do we end up with concentrated amounts of heavy metals in our bodies? There are various sources…mercury amalgams (tooth fillings-silver), fumes like gasoline, other petrochemicals, air pollution, our food and water, excessive use of aluminum (pots and pans, deodorant, canned foods) and paints containing lead and or mercury. Strange that as children in school, we were allowed to play with mercury. That was a while ago and it isn’t happening now but most of us were fascinated with it and handled it regularly. I remember having a little vile of it in my desk!!

So what are the symptoms of heavy metal toxicity?
· Chronic pain throughout the muscles and tendons or any soft tissues of the body
· Chronic malaise – general feeling of discomfort, fatigue, and illness
· Brain fog – state of forgetfulness and confusion
· Chronic infections such as Candida
· Gastrointestinal complaints, such as diarrhea, constipation, bloating, gas, heartburn, and indigestion
· Food allergies
· Dizziness
· Migraines and/or headaches
· Visual disturbances
· Mood swings, depression, and/or anxiety
· Nervous system malfunctions – burning extremities, numbness, tingling, paralysis, and/or an electrifying feeling throughout the body

Note: Heavy metal toxicity can produce vague symptoms that sometimes are mistaken for other chronic conditions such as Autism, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, depression, Multiple Sclerosis, and a host of other serious disorders. Discuss heavy metal toxicity with your healthcare professional before receiving any diagnosis or treatment for a serious chronic condition.

Something many people don’t know is that chronic or reoccurring infections, parasites, fungus (candida) can occur due to heavy metals. The organisms bind to the metals and make them impossible to get rid of. This causes a host of other issues and can damage the gut lining and throw the gut balance off.
So in order to deal with this properly we not only need to detox the metals but restore health and balance to the gut.

So to test for heavy metals, there is only one accurate method although there are people testing through blood, hair and urine. It is done by using a provocative challenge and then taking a fecal sample that we send to the lab. This means that we use Chela-Zyme for 7 days. 6 – 2 x a day on an empty stomach, starting on a Monday and then the following Monday the sample is taken and you call FedEx to pick up the test kit. So essentially, the Chela-Zyme chelates the metals into the feces and when we take the sample, the metals can be measured properly. The cost is $130 + GST. Shipping by FedEx is included.

What happens if you have heavy metal toxicity?

Well, fortunately Biotics Research have a very specific product for this problem, which is the same Chela-Zyme you used to do the provocative challenge along with some other products to support the detoxification process. See the protocols at the end of this document. Remember, we also need to heal your gut and balance it so those protocols are there too.

Here is the story of how Biotics developed Chela-Zyme…

In 1980, Biotics Research Corporation began investigating the use and production of Spirulina plankton. A leading expert from the University of Texas provided insight into methods of production, as well as pure Spirulina cultures that were the starting culture for their research and production.

Production was halted when scientists at Biotics isolated what they considered the “active” principal of Spirulina the porphyrin ring of chlorophyll. While many claims for the nutritional value of Spirulina have been made, the consensus was the most significant value in Spirulina was chlorophyll. However, the chlorophyll content in Spirulina is low (typically less than 1%).

Chela-ZymeTM – A Concentrated Porphyrin Product

Unlike traditional chlorophyll products, Chela-ZymeTM is a concentrated porphyrin supplement. By increasing the porphyrin content, the heavy metal binding capability is also increased, providing clinicians with a natural, effective “chelating” tool.

Porphyrins have the ability to bind divalent metal ions due to the nitrogen atoms of the tetrapyrrole nucleus. The central ion in chlorophyll is magnesium, which is freed from chlorophyll under acidic conditions, permitting other metals to bind in its place. Toxic metals, such as mercury, lead and arsenic, are complexed first. Then excess amounts of other divalent metals, such as calcium, can be complexed by porphyrins.

Investigational Data on Chela-ZymeTM

Scientists at Biotics Research Corporation studied the ability of Chela-ZymeTM to bind heavy metals in vitro. Chela-ZymeTM was dialyzed against aqueous solutions of heavy metal ions. Afterward, the concentration of heavy metal ion remaining in the dialysis medium was determined. As can be seen by the Investigational Data Chart, Chela-ZymeTM proved to be very effective in binding heavy metals. Using dialysis, the following exchange range for toxic metals was established: See Investigational Data Chart. Measurements were made using atomic absorption techniques (flame, furnace and hydride methods), using a Perkin-Elmer 603 spectrophotometer.

Why is the Paleo Diet the Best?

Paleo-Diet---chart-1-One wonders if any one way of eating is right for everyone and of course there will always be variations for each individual. However, from all our time in the holistic health business, the one way of eating that stands out is the Paleo Diet. For one thing…it isn’t a ‘diet’ per se. It’s just the right way to eat so if you are doing that, you shouldn’t gain unwanted fat. Just be aware that there are 2 takes on the paleo diet. One is protein, protein, protein so high in meats, fish and other proteins. The other one, which I think is a better way for most is the vegetable based paleo diet. This can be vegetarian but not necessarily and for myself, I don’t feel great on a veg diet so I prefer to include meat and fish but just not tons. So just be aware of that as you plan out what works best for you.

So what does it entail…basically, think about what our early ancestors would have eaten…before farming started. They would have had some meat, fish, vegetables and greens they could gather, nuts, seeds, berries and other fruit when in season. They would not have eaten out of season and they would not have had grains so therefore no gluten. It is becoming more and more known how much harm gluten does to us. So I know it’s hard to give up bread and the like but if you truly want to be healthy you must cut it out or severely limit it. Watch the media in the future and you will see this start to become mainstream much to the grain farmers chagrin. But it isn’t just wheat…rice is a starch too and there are some other grains that don’t have gluten but still give you a big sugar hit due to the starch content so they really should be limited too. We really don’t need grains so eat them either not at all or sparingly.

Then there’s dairy…it is one of the biggest allergens that we consume along with corn (most is GMO), wheat and other gluten foods, soy (also GMO). So unless it’s goat’s milk or fermented it’s best to also keep dairy low on the totem pole of foods you consume. A true paleo diet would not include dairy.

They also would have gotten fat in their diet from the food so the fat in meat, fish, maybe eggs to a certain extent (some people can be allergic) , seeds and nuts. They would not have used oils. However, if you use cold pressed oils like olive and grape seed that’s acceptable but be careful in cooking that you aren’t burning the oil. Coconut oil is a good choice too.

I am of the mind that moderation is always best. When we go too extreme, it’s hard to live in this world but do your best to adhere more to this type of diet and you will reap the benefits health wise.

So do eat….

Meat and Poultry from organic sources, fish (not farmed) and be aware of the radiation content due to Fukoshima so think of where it’s coming from. The Pacific got the big blast unfortunately.

Eggs in moderation as long as you aren’t sensitive to them

Fermented dairy in moderation

Lots of greens and other non starchy vegetables

Moderately from the starchy veg category such as beets, squash, potato family, carrots, parsnips

Low glycemic fruit such as berries and other fruit in season but consider moderation due to sugar

Nuts and seeds and also sprout them

Small amounts of cold pressed oils…NO Canola!! Olive and grape seed are best, Flax, coconut.

What we do in the morning is either raw granola (see my other blog ‘Good Nutrition in a Nutshell’ for recipes), poached eggs with some raw flat bread or some veggies or berries, raw flat bread with nut/seed pate and sprouts. A Paleo Wrap with scrambled eggs and veg or nut pate and sprouts etc. So we try to put some emphasis on raw food at breakfast and lunch.

Lunch could be soup with veg and meat, raw falafels with tzatziki and olives in a lettuce leaf wrap, raw flat bread with avocado, tomatoes, sprouts, and whatever else you want on there…maybe some left over organic chicken etc. Salad…I keep some cider/lemon marinated veg handy so that if I’m rushed I don’t have to chop etc and that way I can make sure I get my veggie quota for the day. We make our own dressings too. I would suggest investing in a dehydrator so you can make the raw foods and they keep really well so make lots of the flat bread and granola so you are good to go for a while. When preparing food in the dehydrator, temp must not be above 113 F or enzymes and goodies will be destroyed.

Dinner will consist of some cooked protein, a big salad and some other cooked veg. Sometimes it’s just a big salad with some protein added.

Do we ever make fried chicken, lasagna and all those favourites? Yes, but rarely and we use organic chicken and a reasonable oil for frying but deep frying doses cause the oil to change for the worst so it is best to do this only occasionally. I use non gluten noodles for pasta or I use my spiralizer to make zucchini noodles or maybe some spaghetti squash on occasion. So you can see even when you are breaking the rules, you can still make better choices. It’s also a REALLY good idea to take digestive enzymes when eating the odd meal like this or if eating out.

So our take on things is a combo of the paleo diet and raw foods. In our raw food recipes we do use some sprouted buckwheat and garbanzo beans but the sprouting makes them easy to process in our bodies. So we aren’t strictly adhering to the paleo diet but this combination works well for us. You have to find your own balance.

I’m attaching a food list and menu plan from Biotics ‘Control-It’ weight loss program. It’s stricter than my take on things but it is specifically for weight loss. They also recommend an appropriate EFA supplement, adrenal support and nutrient packed rice protein powder to go along with the food plan.

Control-IT_ApprovedFoodList    Keep in mind they are saying tofu, edamame are ok but they are trying to cater to the vegans as well so I personally wouldn’t eat these. This is not entirely a paleo diet as some might see it as they are allowing a very small amount of starch from grains like rice and oats.

Control-IT Meal Plans

If you want more info about the whole Control-It plan. Video  ControlITSheet

My parting words are…don’t go nuts (no pun intended) beating yourself up. Make the transition slowly and remember we also need to have fun and stuff our faces with pizza once in a while. LOL Just remember…heavy on the ‘once in a while’! AND if you are allergic or sensitive to gluten…maybe choose a gluten free crust:) Anyway…basically…take one day at a time and think about the consequences of continuing to eat the way modern society has taught us. Go back to basics and you will be glad you did. I’ll be posting more raw and paleo oriented recipes on my other blog as I go along but there are some up there now for you.

Here’s a couple of links to other paleo diet sites…one says no salt but that I can’t go with. Use grey, celtic salt, himalayan or any other GOOD quality sea or land salt.

Pain-A DiffRANT Approach

drugsPain is the most common reason people seek medical advice. Is it any surprise that pain medication is the most frequently purchased?

There are natural alternatives to NSAIDS that you might not be aware of that are just as effective and in some cases even more. It’s important to understand that although NSAIDs are effective for the short term, they can cause arthritic changes in joints, internal bleeding…even death.

According to the July 27, 1998 issue of the American Journal of Medicine, “Conservative calculations estimate that approximately 107,000 patients are hospitalized annually for NSAID related GI complications and at least 16,500 NSAID deaths occur each year among arthritis patients alone.”

Let’s face it, nothing works for everybody. However, diet is essential. We want to stop feeding the inflammatory fires created by a diet that is drenched in refined sugars and starches and hydrogenated oils. Also, the standard North American diet is sorely lacking in dietary antioxidants and buffering minerals.

The best way to reduce pain via diet is to go on a gluten/dairy free diet designed to be devoid of the major allergens. We always tell clients do the best you can with the diet and keep a food journal. See if you can detect any foods associated with your pain and stiffness. Become part of the healing process and take responsibility for what goes into your mouth.

Of course physical manipulation is always suggested whenever possible. Movement creates an environment where cells can be nourished and toxins removed. So this could be in the form of chiropractic manipulations, gentle exercise, walking, yoga or maybe pilates.

BioDMulsionPain strategies can be broken into 4 categories: EFAs (essential fatty acids), vitamin D, enzymes and botanicals. We’ve covered EFAs and vitamin D on other blogs and enews, so we won’t belabor them here. You can check out the links for more info. Just to be clear, at one time we thought that it was really only people in sun deprived areas that had D deficiencies but this has been proven to not be true so consider supplementing with a good quality Vitamin D. We use Bio D Mulsion Forte from Biotics or Cataplex D from Standard Process. Our preference for EFAs are varied depending on the situation but mainly we use Optimal EFAs, EFA SIRT Supreme or Bio Mega 3 Liquid from Biotics. From SP it would be likely Tuna Omega 3 Oil.

In terms of botanical combinations, Sculacia from Biotics works well. It comes from two different plants; Skullcap and Catechu from Acacia. Skullcap is used for its anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor activity and also has the ability to reduce the TH2 fraction of the immune system. Catechu is historically used to treat hypertension, diarrhea and stomach problems like dysentery and colitis. This botanical compound provides an all natural patented blend of two different classes of flavanoids: free-B-ring flavanoids and flavins.

Various environmental factors increase cytokines which in turn increase the expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and 5-lipoygenase. At a cellular level, these enzymes convert aracadonic acid to inflammatory metabolites like prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes. The beauty of this blend of flavanoids is the inhibition of both Cox-2 and 5-lipoygenase; however, it does not block the anti-inflammatory enzyme COX-1.

Sculacia is Biotics Research Corporation’s premier product for the joint pain associated with osteoarthritis. One could use 1-2 capsules three times a day. As mobility and stiffness subside reduce to patient comfort levels.

Saligesic from SP could be considered as an alternative. Another product from Priority One that works well for some is PRF (Pain Relief Formula).

Proteolytic enzymes are substances produced in animals and plants that are used to break down proteins. They are involved in digestion, cell turnover, blood clotting, cell division, immune functions, and inflammation reduction.

Unfortunately, if inflammation is severe enough, these naturally occurring enzymes are either inactivated or cannot get to their sites of action.
Proteases can be supplied as nutritional supplements to correct local deficiencies.

Proteolytic enzymes have been documented in hundreds of medical literature reports to have effectiveness for the following conditions: bruising,
sprains, strains, fractures, low back pain, dental surgery, digestive difficulties, arthritis, etc.
L. Bucci, Proteolytic Enzymes and Acute Injuries, The Nutritional Supplement Advisor; Chiropractic Products; June 1988

Intenzyme Forte is Biotics answer to proteolytic enzymes and must be taken on an empty stomach to work properly for inflammatory conditions.

Fall Allergies? Blame Them on Ethyl

fall treeFall?  … Get ready for it!

Yes, the leaves are already falling and with that we can ‘fall’ into the doldrums of winter.

Depressed, anxious, confused, congested?  Snotty nose, plugged ears, coughing, sneezing?  Remember them from last year?

YOU MIGHT WANT TO BLAME THAT ON   “ETHYL”.

Who’s Ethyl?  Ethyl is short for ethylene, a gas released when the leaf leaves the tree.  You might know this gas as the agent in the ripening of fruit or one of the emissions from our car motors.

Just like the release of automobile emissions into the air, which we breathe, so too do we breathe in the ethylene from the tree.  You wouldn’t put your nose directly in line with your car muffler, but you can’t avoid breathing in this ethylene gas if you’re around the trees.  The internal combustion motor vents through the muffler.  The human combustion motor is the liver and it vents through the chimney aka our nose.  Liver temperature can get to 108 degrees when needing to burn off or combust toxins or pollutants.  That means more heat escapes up through the nose.  A fireplace can create creosote, a nose makes  mucous.  Swallow that and even more toxins enter the liver. Yuck!

What to do? What to do?  AVOID RAKING YOUR LEAVES TILL THE TREE(S) ARE BARE.  I know, I know … you can’t stand the mess.  And if the rain is heavy, those leaves begin to mold and now we have to deal with even more toxins.  Hey, gas masks could be advised if your sensitive and anti-histamines are advised (especially on the TV commercials).  And if you have MCS or Multiple Chemical Sensitivites; watch out.

Here’s a practical solution.  Saturate your chimney, ok your nose with a diluted homeopathic called Allerforce; yes to force out the allergies. Put equal parts distilled water and Allerforce in a mister, about a tablespoon each.  Spray into your face and breathe in through your nose three times in a row.  Repeat often when entering treed areas or if raking, repeat every 3 minutes. BioActives are the company that makes this homeopathic.

Before the fall season really gets going take 2 BioFCTS  and 2 Histoplex AB (AirBorn) per day to prepare your liver.  Those two work exceptionally well if going to visit and the house has cats or dogs.  Bring your Allerforce too. Biotics Research make Bio FCTS and Histoplex AB.

Our best to you as we start “Falling”.

Oh yah and after falling the furnaces and heaters start up.  This is the beginning of flu season or maybe it isn’t; maybe its all that mold and fungus.  Hmmm; more on that soon.

Contact us re ordering any nutraceuticals. They are only available through health care practitioners.

Why Are We So Allergic?

Pollen

Pollen-Scratchy little devils!

Why am I allergic to everything?

How do you get an allergy?

A couple of common questions…

An allergy is an overreaction to a generally harmless substance and the causative substance is called an allergen.

Initially allergies are airborne in nature and untreated or repeated exposures cause year round symptoms due to hyper-sensitizing.

Histamine is a potent chemical that causes…congestion, runny or itchy nose, watery itchy eyes, itchy roof of mouth, frequent sneezing, coughing, scratchy throat etc. Sometimes people just think they have a cold.

When an allergen such as pollen is absorbed into the body of a hyper-sensitive or allergic person, the immune system views it as an invader and the attack reaction begins. The immune system’s white blood cell’s antibodies produce IgE antibodies. These antibodies attach themselves to mast cells which are blood cells made up of several types of tissues and containing many granules rich in histamine and heparin (an anti coagulant). Although best known for their role in allergies and anaphylaxis, mast cells play an important protective role as well, being intimately involved in wound healing and defense against pathogens.

Mast cells are present in most tissues characteristically surrounding blood vessels and nerves and are especially prominent near the boundaries between the outside world and the internal milieu such as skin, mucosa of the lungs and digestive tract as well as the mouth, conjunctiva and nose.

Maintaining digestive health is key to the health of your body. Your intestines make up 70% of your immune system called GALT-Gut Associated Lymph Tissue. A healthy gut protects you from bacteria, viruses, parasites and absorbs vitamins and nutrients from your food. When it is not working properly, the result is constipation/diarrhea, allergies, stomach pain and bloating and acid reflux. This is why when people are traveling to foreign places, we suggest they take HCl and enzymes at their meals and we also recommend ADP (Biotics Research’s emulsified oregano oil) to keep them safe from the buggies. We have never had a single person who has followed this regime come back from a trip and say they got sick.

So your immune system starts in the gut! AND usually… food allergies, sensitivities, colitis as well as airborne or contact (skin) eg. eczema, psoriasis and skin rashes are related to digestive/immune problems.

It’s time to consider what are you eating?

Is your diet high in histamine/inflammatory producing foods? The standard western diet is usually the culprit in histamine/inflammatory conditions. http://theconsciouslife.com/top-10-inflammatory-foods-to-avoid.htm/comment-page-3#comment-18149 This blog has some good info regarding these foods so check it out.

The medical approach is symptom based and approaches the problem after the fact instead of being preventative. So they usually tell you to avoid the problem substance and if it’s pollen to stay indoors. That’s not always easy for everyone. Or…they will give you antihistamines, sprays, shots etc., which can be addictive and always have side effects (all drugs do). You can also build up a tolerance to them and need more or they don’t work at all.

Apparently people that choose the allergy shot avenue rarely complete the therapy. Here’s the main reason why…on average there is one shot per week for 6 months. Then every 2 weeks for 4 years…yep…I wouldn’t last either!

Also consider that 40% to 50% of asthma cases reported are actually caused by allergies.

So what do we do? To begin, you should start the prevention 3 months before the allergy season is to begin. This year it was mild weather so it started early. So treatment should start in fall. If you have them now (April), don’t despair as we can help now but be aware that next year you should be on top of it early.

1. Check out the blog above and start avoiding as many mucous forming and inflammatory foods as you can. Unhealthy fats such as trans fats are one inflammatory food…they are too high in Omega 6 so avoid these oils regardless of whether you have allergies or not…corn (can be GMO too), safflower, sunflower, peanut, canola and soybean (another GMO possibility). Trans fats are not allowed in restaurants in BC now BUT they likely are using canola or soybean oils to be cost efficient. Also, refined carbohydrates like flour and sugar that are high on the glycemic index, exacerbate inflammatory conditions. These foods elevate insulin and glucose levels, which raise levels of pro-inflammatory messengers. Intolerance to wheat, gluten and dairy can initiate an inflammatory overflow that starts in the gut but can have far-reaching effects in other systems.

2. Support the Big 5-Stomach, Pancreas, Liver, Gall Bladder and Adrenals. Liver and GB allergies are often a result of an overloaded toxic state within the liver. As the primary organ responsible for processing everything we come in contact with, the liver filters out any toxic components put into the body. If the quantity of a substance entering the bloodstream is too great for the liver to process quickly, the immune system recognizes the molecules as being an allergen and produces antibodies against them. Through the filtering process, the liver plays a substantial role in reducing the effect an established or potential allergen will have on the body. Because histamine is contained in almost all body tissues, especially the lungs, nose, sinuses, skin, intestinal mucosa and certain blood cells (mast and basophils), it is able to cause a wide variety of symptoms, as well as pain and inflammation.

Adrenal function plays an important role in histamine/allergic reactions. Cortisol, one of the primary hormones produced by the adrenal glands, is a strong anti-inflammatory. The amount of cortisol circulating in the blood is a key factor in controlling the level of inflammatory reactions in the body.

Healthy adrenal function plays an important role in mediating the histamine release and inflammatory reactions that produce the symptoms experienced with allergies. If the adrenals are fatigued, it is more difficult to produce the additional amounts of cortisol necessary to counteract the inflammatory allergic reactions. So in other words, increase in adrenal fatigue increases allergies or allergies seem to get worse.

The more histamine is released, the harder the adrenals have to work to produce enough cortisol and the more fatigued they may become. It is common that people with food and environmental allergies tend to experience adrenal fatigue as well. Reduced cortisol allows histamines to inflame the tissues more, leading to deepening adrenal fatigue as well as to bigger allergic reactions. Also, adrenal imbalance will not only prevent cortisol release but interfere with proper sugar handling and the balance between the liver, adrenals and pancreas.

Food allergens can interfere with daily functioning and become a profound stress on your adrenals, so it is important to find and eliminate food sensitivities and allergies in order to both decrease your allergy load and promote adrenal health. Come in for a Zyto food scan and see if you are exhibiting any sensitivities to particular foods.

To support the stomach, supplement at meals with HCl as most people have too little hydrochloric acid to break down their food. It is very rare to have too much acid BUT it may feel like you have too much if you have symptoms of acid reflux. Medically, drugs that reduce stomach acid are given which in the long run, makes things worse. We use Biotics Research Hydrozyme which has HCl and enzymes or HCl+ which is straight HCl. From Standard Process the product of choice is Zypan. Also, see our link for Dr. Whitaker’s digestive complex.

For the pancreas, again, lack of digestive enzymes will allow an inflammatory process to remain in the gut and small intestines and allow a malabsorption environment to continue.

So here are some other products to consider: Cytozyme AD or ADHS for the adrenals (Biotics), Histoplex AB (Biotics) for acute allergies (so those of you that are suffering now, this is a good option along with some HCl+.) Also, consider the link to Dr. Lark’s Energy Vitalizer to help boost adrenals. Another item we can get is a called Allergen 11 from BioActives. It is a homeopathic remedy that can be taken under the tongue and also, a dropperful can be put into a sprizter bottle of about 4 oz purified water and sprayed into the air and you just breathe it in. It’s really great to use before heading out to the garden etc.

Another thing that could be helpful is acidophilus for the gut flora so consider BioDoph 7 from Biotics which is a pre and pro biotic or have a look at the link to Dr. William’s Probiotic Advantage. Anything we suggest from Standard Process or Biotics must be ordered by phone (778-788-4325) or email as these companies require that their products are recommended by a doctor. The other products mentioned, can be ordered via the links on the side bar. Another option is the Allergy TheraEx BioApps. 2 appsWear on the left upper arm and change every 3 days. http://www.bioappscanada.com for more info.

Enter our FaceBook contest to win a bottle of Histoplex AB and HCl+…your basic allergy kit. Contest runs to the end of April 2013.
