Essential Fatty Acids-The Good, The Bad and the Ugly

Biomega3Ola!

No, not hello, but O for oil, L for low and A for acid.

Put that with Can and we have Canola, Canada Low Erucic Acid Rape (LEAR). Canola sure sounds better than rapeseed oil.

The oil from the rapeseed is the most toxic of all food oil plants. It is part of the mustard family, from which came mustard gas as a chemical warfare agent and blistered the lungs of many World War One soldiers. Canola oil contains large amounts of isothiocyanates, cyanide. It is an industrial oil used as a lubricant, synthetic rubber base and as an illuminant for the slick color pages in magazines.

Rapeseed oil was in widespread use in England and Europe between 1986 and 1991 till it was thrown out because of cows, pigs and sheep going blind, lost their minds and attacked people; they had to be SHOT!!! Remember Mad Cow; right. It wasn’t scrapie, it was canola oil :(.

It does not belong in the human body.

Here son, take this, it’s good for you! Yuk Dad, it tastes awful. Yes son, but it’s good for you.

Remember that? It was CLO or cod liver oil. Who sold my Dad on that? Grandpa did. Our Van Dueck ancestry has been traced back 8 generations to the areas of the North Sea. My metabolic profile is a parasympathetic fast. If we divide the earth latitudinally from zero at the equator to 10 at the north pole, I’m a 9! I need the ocean fish fats and the animal and land ones as well.

50 years later I understand what my Grandpa was doing. And I finally found a way to explain it to myself and patients. Fish oils, specifically the deep ones or Omega 3’s act like… believe it or not…ANTIFREEZE. Think about it for a sec, those fish live in frigid water, yet thrive. Some toads can freeze and thaw months later. That’s what antifreeze does. Compare it to the radiator in your vehicle; same thing. It keeps the motor hot in freezing temps and cold in hot temps. The oils in our body keep our blood and lymph moving, but the omega 3’s ‘radiate’ our temp control thermostat, which by the way is in the brainstem. So neck problems plus antifreeze issues can cause temperature fluctuations.

So check your antifreeze levels by contacting (Contact Reflex Analysis) the oil and salt (dehydration ) reflexes. Trace a finger along your collarbones towards the breast bone. You will come to a notch and a bump. Press hard down into these notches. If tender, it could be an indicator of deficiency of oil and/or salt. 50% of our brain and nerves are DHA or Omega 3. The brain is essentially a glob of cholesterol in a pool of salt water. When doctors convinced the food industry to restrict salt and fat; they made a powerful monetary move to keep us sick. No salt, no fat equals a shrinking brain, aka dementia, alzheimers, MS etc. Add some canola or other irradiated trans fats and voila MadHuman Disease.

*Just a note…get good salt like Grey Salt, Celtic Salt, Himalayan etc.

I was born in Vancouver and love seafood. I have startled many of my fishing buddies by eating eyes, roe and raw liver at the dock! But I can get my 3’s easily from our product company, Biotics, Omega 111 liquid. It has a pleasant lemon flavour to it. No longer is it YUK Dad.

You can’t lose fat unless you eat fat, but the right fat. If your cholesterol is above normal, eat Omega 3 liquid 2 grams/day if slightly elevated and up to 4 gm/s day if severe. If you have arthritic conditions you will need 5 or even more/day. Contact us for more information.

Pain-A DiffRANT Approach

drugsPain is the most common reason people seek medical advice. Is it any surprise that pain medication is the most frequently purchased?

There are natural alternatives to NSAIDS that you might not be aware of that are just as effective and in some cases even more. It’s important to understand that although NSAIDs are effective for the short term, they can cause arthritic changes in joints, internal bleeding…even death.

According to the July 27, 1998 issue of the American Journal of Medicine, “Conservative calculations estimate that approximately 107,000 patients are hospitalized annually for NSAID related GI complications and at least 16,500 NSAID deaths occur each year among arthritis patients alone.”

Let’s face it, nothing works for everybody. However, diet is essential. We want to stop feeding the inflammatory fires created by a diet that is drenched in refined sugars and starches and hydrogenated oils. Also, the standard North American diet is sorely lacking in dietary antioxidants and buffering minerals.

The best way to reduce pain via diet is to go on a gluten/dairy free diet designed to be devoid of the major allergens. We always tell clients do the best you can with the diet and keep a food journal. See if you can detect any foods associated with your pain and stiffness. Become part of the healing process and take responsibility for what goes into your mouth.

Of course physical manipulation is always suggested whenever possible. Movement creates an environment where cells can be nourished and toxins removed. So this could be in the form of chiropractic manipulations, gentle exercise, walking, yoga or maybe pilates.

BioDMulsionPain strategies can be broken into 4 categories: EFAs (essential fatty acids), vitamin D, enzymes and botanicals. We’ve covered EFAs and vitamin D on other blogs and enews, so we won’t belabor them here. You can check out the links for more info. Just to be clear, at one time we thought that it was really only people in sun deprived areas that had D deficiencies but this has been proven to not be true so consider supplementing with a good quality Vitamin D. We use Bio D Mulsion Forte from Biotics or Cataplex D from Standard Process. Our preference for EFAs are varied depending on the situation but mainly we use Optimal EFAs, EFA SIRT Supreme or Bio Mega 3 Liquid from Biotics. From SP it would be likely Tuna Omega 3 Oil.

In terms of botanical combinations, Sculacia from Biotics works well. It comes from two different plants; Skullcap and Catechu from Acacia. Skullcap is used for its anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor activity and also has the ability to reduce the TH2 fraction of the immune system. Catechu is historically used to treat hypertension, diarrhea and stomach problems like dysentery and colitis. This botanical compound provides an all natural patented blend of two different classes of flavanoids: free-B-ring flavanoids and flavins.

Various environmental factors increase cytokines which in turn increase the expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and 5-lipoygenase. At a cellular level, these enzymes convert aracadonic acid to inflammatory metabolites like prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes. The beauty of this blend of flavanoids is the inhibition of both Cox-2 and 5-lipoygenase; however, it does not block the anti-inflammatory enzyme COX-1.

Sculacia is Biotics Research Corporation’s premier product for the joint pain associated with osteoarthritis. One could use 1-2 capsules three times a day. As mobility and stiffness subside reduce to patient comfort levels.

Saligesic from SP could be considered as an alternative. Another product from Priority One that works well for some is PRF (Pain Relief Formula).

Proteolytic enzymes are substances produced in animals and plants that are used to break down proteins. They are involved in digestion, cell turnover, blood clotting, cell division, immune functions, and inflammation reduction.

Unfortunately, if inflammation is severe enough, these naturally occurring enzymes are either inactivated or cannot get to their sites of action.
Proteases can be supplied as nutritional supplements to correct local deficiencies.

Proteolytic enzymes have been documented in hundreds of medical literature reports to have effectiveness for the following conditions: bruising,
sprains, strains, fractures, low back pain, dental surgery, digestive difficulties, arthritis, etc.
L. Bucci, Proteolytic Enzymes and Acute Injuries, The Nutritional Supplement Advisor; Chiropractic Products; June 1988

Intenzyme Forte is Biotics answer to proteolytic enzymes and must be taken on an empty stomach to work properly for inflammatory conditions.

Declining Eye Health-What Can You Do?

FOCUS ON EYE HEALTH
Your Eyes are the “Gateway to Your Soul” Good eye health and eye care are crucial to preserving your vision, treating eye problems early, and protecting your overall health. Your eyes are the “gateway to your soul,” and they can also reveal common or serious health problems — such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and HIV. 1Vision Problems Rising Rapidly in the U.S.“The increasing diabetes prevalence in the U.S. is leading to more vision loss,” says researcher David S. Friedman, MD, PhD, MPH. He is the director of the Dana Center for Preventive Ophthalmology at the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute and Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore. “We have to recognize that this is a large public health problem so we can start developing methods to deal with it.”The findings appear in the Dec. 12, 2012 issue of the Journal of American Medical Association.

What can we do together?

Nutraceutical products that support eye health

Eat right to protect your sight. You’ve heard carrots are good for your eyes. But eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, particularly dark leafy greens such as spinach, kale, or collard greens is important for keeping your eyes healthy, too. Research has also shown there are eye health benefits from eating fish high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, tuna, and halibut. Consider Organic Red Palm oil. We give it to our parrots too. It has lots of betacarotene as well as being a good fat.

World War II

Bilberry jam was consumed by the British Royal Air force (RAF) pilots to improve their night vision.

Sunshine & Vit. D

Recent literature suggests vitamin D deficiency is widespread, especially during winter months in cold climates. Research suggests vitamin D is associated with a lower risk of macular degeneration. We recommend supplementing with Bio D Mulsion from Biotics (available in Canada in 400 IU and 1000 IU and in the US in 2000 IU) especially in areas like Canada, Northern US and other parts of the world where sunlight is limited for a great deal of the year. Supplementatioon should not be necessary during July and August. Also, keep in mind that we absorb the light through the palms of our hands and soles of our feet (they are our solar panels) so for 3 minutes a day go outside and hold your palms up to the light.

Butter is Better!

Recently I was asked to reproduce some info from about 2 years ago that I wrote about margarine and why you should avoid it like the plague. I have no idea where that original email is now but here’s the lowdown.

You may be old enough to remember years ago when you bought margarine, it came sealed in a plastic bag with a red thingy inside that contained food colouring. As kids we loved to break the red thing and smoosh the marg around to colour it. Great fun! It really was quite unappealing to look at until the colour was distributed. What we didn’t know then was that it was a trans fat and most of you have an idea that they are not good for us. Here’s a chapter from Nutrition in a Nutshell Demystifying Fats. Get the whole book and The Non-GMO Shopping Guide free when you sign up for our weekly Healthflash on our website. Demystifying Fats tells you all you need to know.

Here’s a snippet I found on the web with a few pearls of information.

‘Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. It is made of cottonseed OIL (now it’s deadly canola), with the seeds cleaned by toxic carcino-chemical hexane, given shelf life by hydrogenating it, i.e. by boiling it so long that it turned sludgey when cooled, and then hardened into a brick. SEE THE FULL UGLY STORY here. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back. It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavorings so maybe you do eat it but DO YOU KNOW…the difference between margarine and butter?  Read on to the end…gets very interesting!  Both have the same amount of calories.  Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams.  Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.  BUT GUESS WHAT? Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods. Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few only because they are added!  Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods. Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years.

And now, for Margarine..  Very high in trans fatty acids. The oil you’re never supposed to eat. Triple risk of coronary heart disease.  Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)  Increases the risk of cancers up to five fold. Lowers quality of breast milk. Decreases immune response. (flouride in water or toothpaste also does that, so we have increased suceptibility to disease, lessened ‘fight’ response. Margarine decreases insulin response. Turns you into a type II diabetic. And here’s the most disturbing fact…. HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!

Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC. This fact alone was enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).

You can try this yourself:  Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things: * no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something) * it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value; nothing will grow on it. Even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic. Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?
