Stress & the Adrenal Glands-A VERY Common Problem

We were at a seminar a while back and the doctor teaching said, “Whenever you see a thyroid patient, always check adrenals and bowel as one of the underlying causes.”

He went on to say that when the adrenals are over-stimulated, the body will try to compensate via the hypothalamus-pituitary axis and ultimately affects the thyroid. In other words, it’s like the brakes are being applied to the thyroid. That’s why some patients are given thyroid medication or supplementation and feel great for a few months or even years but ultimately will return to their prior hypothyroid status.

Recently we saw some research on Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and it stated that one of the key principles to fix the thyroid is to address the adrenals. Increased cortisol can tilt the delicately balanced TH1/TH2 immune regulation. It also said that when someone sees their doctor for severe dermatitis or an inflammatory condition the usual and customary medical treatment is to give prednisone to reset the immune system. The research suggested that resetting the adrenals by using adaptogenic botanicals, like the ones in the Biotics product ADHS would be a wise step to take.

adrenal glands

So why are the adrenals and other endocrine glands not happy? People are under more emotional, physical, and mental pressures than we can imagine. Just because people don’t always express this doesn’t mean they are not experiencing it. If you listen close to conversations wherever you go, people are talking about being overwhelmed, exhausted, stretched to their limits, pushed at work, and relationships are strained. Remember stress comes in the form of chemical stress, mechanical stress, thermal stress, and emotional stress. And if you think a big workout will help…think again…If you have adrenal stress, too much exercise can be your downfall. Keep to light exercise and wait to get your adrenals back on track before signing up for a marathon.

Stress has a powerful effect on hormones. It can increase cortisol and catecholamines, decrease gonadotropins and sex hormones. Stress has also been correlated to reductions in TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) and the conversion of T4 (correlates thyroid to heart) T3 (thyroid to kidneys). Also, the effects of stress can be seen in the increase of tissue resistance to hormones like T3, estrogen, androgens, insulin, and even cortisol.

The list of symptoms or conditions frequently associated with impaired adrenal function is too long to list. I will attach a questionnaire with a list of symptoms and you can see how it stacks up for yourself. They range from dizziness to depression, apprehension to auto-immune disease, inability to concentrate to the inability to hold adjustments, double mindedness, twitching muscles and pain along the lower rib line. If the thyroid is suffering due to the adrenals failing there’s another list of symptoms that can be involved…referred pain in the left shoulder, for instance. If you have ever had something like that occur and have gone to a chiropractor for help, you will find that the adjustments will be a waste of time as the pain is referred and not a true structural problem.

There are some simple in office tests that can be performed to assess adrenal insufficiency. So if you think that you may fit this category, book an advanced scan and we will see if this what’s causing your ills. With some changes in diet and a nutraceutical program to ‘reset’ the adrenals, you can be on the road to recovery.

Hypoadrenia Questionnaire

Hypothyroid Questionnaire

How do we treat the problem?…to start with we use only high quality nutraceuticals from Biotics Research, Standard Process and there are other great nutraceutical companies too. These products are sold by health care professionals so be wary if you see them online as they may not be what you think…another story!! Health food store products have nowhere near the strength to treat these kind of conditions

We may have to begin with a big boost to the adrenals with a pure adrenal glandular. Then we would move into using the adaptagen adrenal support that was mentioned earlier which is herbal (ADHS). We would likely support the Pituitary/Hypothalamus as well with a glandular. The thyroid would be supported with an amino, L-Tyrosine. L-Tyrosine is the synthetic form of a naturally occurring amino acid produced to stimulate thyroxine, the hormone produced by the thyroid gland. The body needs the amino acid Tyrosine for many functions. It is especially important in thyroid performance, and a lack of L-Tyrosine in the diet can create hypothyroid conditions.

It is also important to support the blood sugar and remove starches and sugars as much as possible from the diet. One of the reasons the adrenal glands become over reactive (and thus worn out) is to alkalize an overly acidic condition. By increasing the foods which have natural buffers and which have an alkaline ash will assist the process. It is essential that patients reduce their refined carbohydrate load (see sugar handling diet below) and increase their water ounces intake to 1/2 their body weight (200 lbs=100 oz/day). Make sure you add a squeeze of lime or lemon to your water the assist absorption.

We may also use Gammanol if there are muscular issues involved. Gammanol Forte with FRAC from Biotics supports muscles, hormones and the GI.

We wouldn’t necessarily do all of this with all clients as each case varies. Also, doses vary from person to person so don’t try to do this without guidance from a professional.

Hypoadrenia Protocol

1. Cytozyme AD or ADB5+ 6-12 per day before 4:00 for 28 days or as recommended by practitioner. After this period change to…
2. ADHS 2×2 (2am and 2 noon)
3. Cytozyme PT/HPT 3 to 6 per day
4. Glucobalance 3 to 9 per day
5. L-Tyrosine 3 to 6 per day
6. If muscle issues/can’t hold adjustments 3 to 6 Gammanol Forte per day

Sugar Control Diet

The following is a trial diet, designed to help recalibrate your bodies sugar control mechanisms, it will increase your energy and vitality. Please follow it very closely. It is not a healthy diet for all times, but it is beneficial for you during this trial period. As your condition improves, your health care practitioner may add back foods to your diet. This way of eating does take a little planning, but is well worth the effort. Most people will lose many of their unhealthy cravings within one or two weeks on this diet. Many who need to loose weight are pleased to find weight loss while on this diet, without being hungry. Others who need to gain weight often find weight return without undue effort.

PROTEIN: Each meal should include minimum 4 to 6 ounces of protein, but you can have as much as you desire. Meat, poultry, fish, and eggs are unlimited. Vegetarians may use soy and tofu items where no allergy exists. This is not ideal as soy isn’t the best for us but if you need to boost protein temporarily with soy then do so or ask us about Biotics Pea Protein Isolate.

VEGETABLES: Eat as much as you desire, you can’t eat too much here. Focus on dark leafy greens, and a variety of colors. No potatoes, yams, or other starchy vegetables.

FRUITS: Careful here, only to be eaten alone between meals as a snack. Leave the sweeter fruits such as bananas, mangoes, persimmons, papayas, dried fruits, etc. alone. One or two pieces of fruit per day should be plenty.

NUTS: Raw nuts, especially raw cashews make a great snack.

GRAINS: No wheat including breads, rolls, muffins and pasta. Only grain allowed is rice, and only at the evening meal. All rice should be roasted first before cooking. Place dry uncooked rice in pan and brown, some of the kernels will pop. Then cook as normal.

DAIRY: No dairy, unless specifically allowed by your doctor.

SWEETENERS: No sweeteners of any kind.

FATS: No artificial fats such as hydrogenated, or partially hydrogenated.

You must eat every 2 hours of the waking day. You need not eat a large volume of food at these snacks, just a fist full of nuts or a carrot or apple or something. No processed or packaged foods, eat only those foods as found in nature. Eat some vegetables raw every day such as salad, unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

Remember this is temporary. After this, a more well rounded approach can be followed like a vegetable based Paleo diet heavy on the raw food. Please ask us about this approach.

Breast Cancer Prevention and Then Some

Susan here today…

First of all here’s what The American Cancer Society says…

Cancer is caused by changes in a cell’s DNA-its genetic “blueprint.” Some of these changes may be inherited from our parents, while others may be caused by outside exposures, which are often referred to as environmental factors. Environmental factors can include a wide-range of exposures, such as the following:

Poor nutrition, tobacco use, physical activity, ultraviolet light, radon gas, infectious agents like bacteria, fungus and parasites, chemotherapy, radiation, immune system-suppressing drugs …interesting that they don’t come right out and say that cancer treatment can cause cancer:(, chemicals, solvents, sprays, cleansers, vapors, air quality, herbicides, pesticides, paint vapors, gasoline, other chemicals, xenohormones or estrogens in water, herbicides, pesticides, and toxic air.

Substances and exposures that can lead to cancer are called carcinogens. Some carcinogens do not affect your DNA directly, but lead to cancer in other ways.

Carcinogens do not cause cancer in every case, all the time. Substances labeled as carcinogens may have different levels of cancer-causing potential. Some may cause cancer only after prolonged, high levels of exposure. And for any particular person, the risk of developing cancer depends on many factors, including how they are exposed to a carcinogen, the length and intensity of the exposure, and the person’s genetic makeup.

In October there is a lot of attention on breast cancer. Cancer plays a role in the lives of most people, either directly or indirectly. So why is breast cancer, in particular so prolific. In the US alone, breast cancer takes the lives of 45,000 women a year. Many in the prime of life! 95% of all breast cancer cases are caused by excess estrogen. So we will be looking at managing estrogen here and to manage your estrogen levels you need to understand the principles of apoptosis (limited cell life) and liver health. The liver is responsible for clearing excessive estrogen from your body so adapting habits that keep it healthy is a must.

Iodine (which most of you know is extremely important to thyroid health) is antagonized by three halides (bromine, fluorine, chlorine). All of these deplete your iodine sources. Iodine is not only needed for thyroid health, but it assists in proper colon function and reduces liver stress thus allowing it to function better and eliminate excess estrogen more efficiently.

bromides3Where do we find halides? Municipal drinking water, bakery products (after 1960, bromine was substituted for iodine due to misinformation about iodine), Gatorade and other sports drinks, some water purifiers so be careful what you buy, medications, pesticides (methylbromide used on foods such as strawberries), pools, hot tubs, car interiors (Love that new car smell!!), flouride toothpaste. Basically flouride, flourine, bromide, bromine, chloride and chlorine all are a problem. See the link for more info on iodine inhibitors.

http://www.co-creative-health-solutions.com/Common-Conditions.html

Here’s an excerpt from a previous blog that further explains how it’s not only estrogen that’s the problem but estrogen mimics.

Years ago, it was found that estrogen added to cancer cells caused the cancers to grow like wild fire. (Hmmm…is that why in their infinite wisdom, the medical world was promoting estrogen replacement? Big pharma, MORE $$$$$ MORE CANCER MORE $$$$) Later researchers accidentally found that cancers cultured in plastic petri dishes had dramatically accelerated growth even without adding estrogen. It turned out that the phthalates leeching out of the plastic containers were such potent cast estrogen mimics that they turned on the growth of cancer cells.

It’s obvious then that synthetic estrogens, whether they are from prescriptions or from estrogen mimics, can alter our chances for breast and other types of cancer. The bad news is that our society is swimming in a sea of estrogen.

Estrogen mimics or xenoestrogens are used in plastic bottles that hold pop and bottled water. They’re also used in plastic wraps that wrap supermarket meats and vegetables, etc. (Best to avoid microwave ovens all together but for sure DO NOT put plastic wrap over food and reheat it in a mikey.) So don’t be drinking water from plastic bottles either. Have you ever seen a big flat of bottled water sitting outside a store like say Walmart in the hot sun? What do you think is happening to the water? Yep…toxins from the heated plastic are going into the water. Also, think about cosmetics…full of chemicals. Find a company that produces natural cosmetics. Take a further look into the sources of these chemicals and how they get into our food and water supply so you can be more savvy. Check out the link below to Dr. Mercola’s chat with Dr. Christine Horner, author of ‘Waking the Warrior Goddess’. She has some good info and options for screening instead of mammograms. You can read the full blog and get the link to this interview here.

http://drdiffrant.com/2013/10/23/what-you-probably-dont-know-about-breast-cancer-prevention/

So what have we learned here? First of all avoid halides as much as possible. Not only will it help prevent cancer but it will help to keep your thyroid gland functioning normally. I call the thyroid your ‘happy’ gland. A great way to become depressed and end up on anti-depressants is to let your thyroid go without the support it needs. What I do is take some Iodine every day, not only for my thyroid but for prevention of cancer. Biotics make it in 2 forms one in a tablet form and one liquid.

http://www.co-creative-health-solutions.com/Common-Conditions.html   more info here on iodine inhibitors.

So I know that you are thinking, ‘How can I avoid halides when they are in my drinking water and I can’t drink bottled water’. Get a decent filter for your house and take your own water with you in a non-plastic container. We have a Kangen machine but they are $4000 approx. You can buy them on a payment plan so that might work for you. If you can’t afford one of these types of machines, Santevia filters are reasonable. It’s better than drinking from the tap and consider that reverse osmosis and distilled water are pretty much devoid of minerals and that’s no good either. We hydrate from minerals. So if you drink water that is devoid of minerals, you will deplete your minerals. You don’t want to do that considering our food is already pathetically low in minerals these days. Modern farming practices have seen to that. A hundred years or so ago 1 apple had almost 1/2 the daily recommended iron. Now…you have to eat 26 apples to get the same amount. Shocking!! Read this if you want to get depressed:( http://drdiffrant.com/2012/04/13/shocking-statistics-about-our-food-supply/

So basically eat a healthy organic diet as much as possible. We tend toward the vegetable based paleo diet and I’m not talking about vegetarianism here. Use the 80/20 rule so you don’t get too stressed out over things. We still have to have some fun! Avoid halides, get an iodine supplement, and support your liver. Another good thing to do is use a mineral supplement. And don’t get some cheap brand. Get a nutraceutical brand like Biotics Research – Multi Mins, Standard Process – All Organic Trace Mins or Nutri West – Trace Min +. These need to be purchased through health care practitioners and there’s a reason for that. These are high quality supplements designed to treat conditions so the products need to be really high quality and properly formulated. We mostly use Biotics. If you get cheap mins, you can’t absorb a lot of them and they can deposit where you don’t want them and cause issues. I recommend using nutraceuticals for any supplement you take.

Another really great thing to use for many reasons is Vitamin D as it is commonly deficient for reasons such as avoiding sunshine, sun screen, where you live and your age. Adequate vitamin D improves apoptosis. So when there is lots of sun, you may be able to get away without a supplement but people with darker skin may tend to have lower D levels so may consider supplementing always. We generally use Biotics Bio D Mulsion but there are other nutraceutical companies with Vitamin D products.

For liver support…Phosphatidylcholine (Biotics). This may also enhance gut function, adrenal efficiency, neurological capabilities and short term memory.

TRIVIA:

In Japan the average daily intake of iodine is 13.8 mg. The US RDA is 150 mcg. Japan has lower incidence of breast cancer, hypothyroid and feminizing cancers. Iodine deficiency is the main predisposing factor for breast cancer and fibrocystic disease. Women share their iodine with thyroid, breasts and ovaries. Before 1960, risk for breast cancer was 1:20. After 1960, iodine in bread was replaced with bromide. Breast cancer is now 1:8 and rising at 1% per year.

Invisible Warfare (Radiation)

fukoshimaBiotics Research Corp. is our main nutrition provider. We are fortunate that within this FDA approved facility there is an outstanding educational provider,  Dr. Alex Vasquez,  with degrees in Chiropractic, Naturopathy and Osteopathy.  (You can see why Dr. Van Dueck is so keen on their products)!

On January 8 Dr. Vasquez presented a webinar on radiation, particularly in regards to Fukoshima’s nuclear meltdown.  He is a member of the AMA program called Advanced Disaster Life Support, which deals with chemical and terrorist warfare.  His credentials are exemplary.

The title was chosen because of this … the results of nutritional deficiencies are very similar to those of poisoning from radiation!!!  The body suffers similar reactions in both cases!

BOTTOM LINE:    effects in organs such as the stomach or glands like the thyroid is rusting, called oxidation.  This can occur in the bone marrow as well.  But in the brain it is called liquefaction.  That just sounds awful, but is the reality.  In radiation exposure it happens quickly.  Nutritional deficiencies take time, but can end up just as devastating (dementias, parkinsons, multiple sclerosis, etc.)  So what do we do in both cases; – learn how to shield and protect!  That’s what anti-oxidants are all about.

Who would of thought of that connection? – Biological researchers, that’s who!  After all, our brain is a basic nuclear power plant; it’s fueled by blood sugar to produce power.

The exposure from Fukoshima was estimated at 30% of that at Chernobyl.

BUT in this case 5% returned to Japan and  95% went into the ocean and air.  Is that why seastars show wasting syndrome, sport salmon stocks are down and walruses and seals have severe skin lesions?

The biological effects in both radiation poisoning and nutritional deficiencies over time rearrange our electrons and therefore change our DNA. And these changes we pass on to our children.  (There has been a 16% increase in congenital hypothyroidism in newborns according to records from 2011)!   Here are suggestions:  cchs@shaw.ca for more info.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SHIELDING AND PROTECTING PRODUCTS FROM Dr. Vasquez:

Paleo plant based diet…this isn’t necessarily a vegetarian diet. It generally consists of mostly fruit, nuts and seeds, vegetables and small amounts of animal protein.

Biotics Research  3 Pro-Multi +, 1 scoop NitroGreens,  2 drops Vit D3 (Bio D Mulsion Forte) and 3 Bio-Protect

Chronic exposure protection:  2 Biodoph 7 and  2 Optimal EFA

(Check TSH levels in blood) Thyroid Stimulating Hormone

To order products, email us. Products are available through health care practitioners only.

PS…it isn’t over yet with Fukoshima…it isn’t entirely under control and the effects that have already been unleashed will last at least another 20 years. Certain foods like tuna, concentrate the radiation more so since there is no clearly established safe level of radiation, limiting these foods is a good idea.

Tough Thyroid Cases

Overview of the thyroid system (See Wikipedia:...

Dr. David Brownstein estimates over 40% of Americans have suboptimal thyroid function.  Some say it’s close to 80%. Part of this can be attributed to our food supply and the lack of minerals in the soil but there are other contributing factors.

First of all, how do you know that you have a thyroid problem? Blood tests aren’t always conclusive so we use a temperature test. Download a Thyroid Temperature Chart so you can record your basal temperature. Also, here are some symptoms that might help you determine if this is something you should look into.

Hyperthyroid Symptoms (overactive)

Racing heart or increased heart rate, nervousness, tremor, dizziness, shortness of breath, chest discomfort, increased problems sleeping, excessive weight loss, excessive sweating, and elevated basal temperature over 98.2. Dr. Broda Barnes (a reknowned researcher of thyroid dysfunction) said if the basal temperature went over 98.2 an immediate reduction in therapy is indicated. In his case he reduced the desiccated porcine thyroid.

Hypothyroid Symptoms (low function) Hypothyroid Questionnaire

Fatigue, morning headaches that wear off during the day, increase in weight, sensitivity to cold (rule out anemia and atherosclerosis), dry brittle hair, hair that falls out easily, dry, scaly or itching skin, reduced initiative, mental confusion, poor memory, low axillary temperature (below 97.8), muscle cramps at rest, reduced immune function, edema especially facial (myxedema), constipation, loss of outside portion of eyebrows, breast, ovarian or uterine cysts/fibroids, increase in serum lipids, increase or decrease in blood pressure, tinnitus, impaired hearing, depression, premature grey hair, red hair, type 1 diabetes, B-12/folate anemia, and vitiligo.

Adrenal Function Hypoadrenia Questionnaire

Additional symptoms of adrenal deficiency include feeling hot all the time, palpitations, low blood pressure (systolic of 100 or less), very slender build, dizziness (especially on standing up quickly), severe allergies, anxiety and feelings of impending doom, hypoglycemia, arthritis, weakness and fatigue after exercise, muscle twitching. There is an overlap between the symptoms resulting from hypothyroidism and adrenal insufficiency. Sometimes it is necessary to support the adrenal glands and thyroid simultaneously. For example, we’ve found clinically that when you place a patient on correct thyroid support, their basal metabolic rate increases and as a result of this, their utilization of minerals increases dramatically. In other words, they begin to utilize them correctly rather than storing them in soft tissue, arteries, the intercostals spaces, the aorta, etc.

*Very often if a person is calcium or magnesium insufficient when beginning treatment for the thyroid and aches and pains are present, they will exacerbate. Iron and copper (Fe/CU) free Multi-Mins at 3-5 tablets twice a day will generally take care of the aches, pains and cramps in a week or so.

Here are two cases that are not often associated with hypothyroidism: sleep apnea and elevated homocysteine. The Southern Medical Journal connected sleep apnea and thyroid hypofunction many years ago. In their report once the thyroid hypofunction was resolved, the sleep apnea resolved. Not all cases of sleep apnea are thyroid related, but it’s worth checking out.

Homocysteine, known as homocystinuria is an indication of B complex deficiency, mainly, folate, B-12, B-6, betaine and recent information indicates certain gene types need B-2 as well. There is a strong correlation between thyroid hypofunction and increased levels of homocysteine. Obviously when homocysteine is increased, dietary changes and supplementation with Bio-B Complex and Beta-TCP is certainly required.

By the way, the Beta-TCP is used for the betaine, also called trimethylglycine. Some companies use the term beta and some use the term trimethylglycine, however both are betaine.  The betaine used by Biotics Research is concentrated from organic beets and is called Beta TCP.

The conversion from T-4 to the active molecule T-3 is dependent upon selenium, iodine, glutathione, zinc, copper and a host of other nutrients and this is why Biotics Research put Meda-Stim into their line. The product Meda-Stim is used to assist with the T-4 to T-3 conversion. Some doctors have called it “one of the best supplemental products available in the country.”

Also, excess cortisol and use of exogenous estrogen will to some degree, interfere with the conversion of T-4 to T-3, therefore any person with adrenal cortical hyperfunction or any person on exogenous estrogen should be checked to determine if they are making the T-4 to T-3 conversion. A common pattern seen with under-conversion is a free T-4 above the midline of the lab range with a free T-3 below the midline of the lab range. When this pattern is present, Meda-Stim is needed.

Here are some other factors that block this conversion.

Here’s a clinical pearl especially useful for resistant cases. Dr. George Goodheart years ago found that cellular resistance to T-3 can often be overcome with RNA using Nuclezyme-Forte at 2 capsules, three times a day or in some cases with riboflavin using Bio-GGG-B at 2 capsule, three times a day.

Another reason why people may not respond to the appropriate treatment is thyroid hormone resistance. Their lab tests are normal but still have hypothyroid symptoms. In other words their Free T4 and Free T3 are above the lab median so the conversion from T4 to T3 has been made but somehow the receptor sites have been blocked. This could be caused by competitive binding of the receptor sites.

Here are some of the factors causing competitive binding and thus thyroid resistance: Bisphenol A, found in many plastics and reusable water containers (a study of 394 adults detected BPA in 95% of urine samples); perchlorate, found in ground water; triclosan, used as an anti-bacterial, antifungal agent in soaps, toothpaste, skin care products, and fabrics (detected in 75% of urine samples especially those with the highest income); PCBs, outlawed in 1979 due to their half life are still in the environment; PBDEs (polybrominated diphenyl ethers), not outlawed and are used as flame retardants in carpet, foam and building materials (detected in meat, fish, vegetables, dairy products, indoor air and household dust).

In some cases, a person’s symptoms and lab tests are normal after a detox. The detox process re-sensitizes the receptor sites and their own thyroid hormones work better. Never underestimate the value of clean food and water and an intentional avoidance of household toxins. Even diabetes patients can need less glucose support after a detox.

So if you’re doing all the right things and still not better, implement the 3-Step Detox from Biotics.

ITS TIME TO FEEL GOOD AGAIN

Dietary Recommendations

Eliminate refined carbohydrates, dairy, gluten and processed foods. Reduce total daily carbohydrate intake if the patient is overweight to 60 gram or less. Eliminate food in the cabbage family, soy, red clover, the skin from poultry, fatty beef, cosmetics containing estrogen and millet. Use only pure water (no well or city water). Increase oil and quality protein. If an increase in dietary protein causes gas and/or bloating, add Betaine Plus HP at 1 capsule in the middle of the meal (increase every third day until the patient experiences a slight burning in their stomach and then reduce).

Additional Notes and Nutrients to Consider

Selenium 200-400 mcg: Se-Zyme Forte provides 100 mcg of a food based selenium.

Iron – make sure ferritin is over 100 for men and 130 for women but under 200. Fe-Zyme provides 25 mg of iron as well as 8 mg of zinc and 2 mg of copper.

Iodine/ Iodide – Iodizyme-HP 1 tablet per day supplies 12.5 mg.

EFAs for cell membrane integrity. Optimal EFAs is a mixture of organic GLA, ALA and EPA/DHA from small fish. Use 3 capsules, twice a day

Magnesium 600-1000 mg – Mg-Zyme supplies 100 mg of aspartate, gluconate and glycinate,

Aqua Mag-Cl supplies 200 mg per tsp. (Due to a salty taste it must be mixed with juice to increase patient compliance.)

Porcine glandular: Biotics Research has the only porcine glandular on the market called GTA. GTA by law has to have the thyroxine removed; however, it has many of the co-factors necessary to feed the thyroid and enhance physiology. GTA has 5 mg of porcine thyroid with trace amounts of selenium, rubidium and SOD and catalase, GTA-Forte II has 20 mg of porcine thyroid with zinc, selenium, copper, rubidium, with SOD and catalase.

Dr. Broda Barnes used 1 grain or 60 mg and added ½ grain or 30 mg every month until the patient bloomed. Dr. Starr found out that sometimes the recommendation of desiccated porcine thyroid made patients worse. This may happen to patients with severe allergies, chemical sensitivities and chronic pain. These were the patients that needed the therapy the most and yet due to toxins and nutrient deficiencies patients would have an aggravation of symptoms. At these times therapy would have to be reduced and then a detox would be instigated. You see, environmental toxins interfere with thyroid as well as other hormonal functions. If the receptor sites of the cell are already full or blocked, then the body will signal a heightened or alarmed state. Therapeutically we need to explain the process and go back to the basics of clean food and some form of detoxification. So in some cases, starting with a detox may be the best way to go.

Hiatal Hernia and IBS

IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) one aspect, known as HH (Hiatal Hernia)

hiatal_hernia_hiatal_herniaThink about this for a moment … your esophagus, stomach and intestines, your entire intestinal tract from mouth to anus; is really the same muscle.

It is just shaped differently along the way to deal with specific digestive duties!!! And because of this, your guts are not internal, but external anatomy, open to the outside environment. (This also applies to your nose, throat and lungs; they too are connected to the outside environment.)

How do muscles react to irritation? They SPASM. A spasm is a contraction or shortening of muscle length. As this muscle, your intestinal tract, shortens, it pulls up into the diaphragm. This forces the top valve of the stomach, the cardiac valve, to open and allow hydrochloric acid to reflux up from your stomach into your esophagus. This creates “heartburn” and chronic sore throat. It probably started years ago with belching, burping, nausea and even vomiting.

***It’s not necessarily true that your stomach is making too much acid, it’s because bile is irritating your stomach so much that acid is leaking up out of your stomach. So taking antacids is not a good idea and if fact will likely make the situation worse over time. Most people do not have enough stomach acid but that’s another story.

If your diaphragm should weaken, slacken or even tear, the spasm can force the stomach up through the diaphragm into the chest cavity. This is called a HIATAL HERNIA. (At birth, this is referred to as a hiatus hernia, in older age it is called a bell-pulsion esophageal hernia; both require surgery). A hiatal hernia can interfere with breathing (sleep apnea) and even cause heart attack-like symptoms. The hernia can force more acid from your stomach, especially when you are lying down or bending over. Don’t do a lot of bending over after eating as this can send your stomach into spasm and give you grief.

Note: Surgery for hiatal hernias is not usually very successful and can even make it worse. As a result of the hiatal hernia, secretions of toxic bile weaken the duodenal membrane and make it susceptible to Helicobacter pylori. I call this the helicopter bacteria, because it comes from houseflies. Once inside you, your immune system recognizes it as a criminal (one of the 4 criminals; bacteria, fungus, parasite and the super criminal, I call the terrorist, the virus). This criminal bacteria, H. pylori, uses ammonia to neutralize stomach acid, so it can get a foothold under your mucous membrane. Once spotted by the immune soldiers, H. pylori are attacked and the resulting fight produces gastritis and eventually ulceration. Small ulcerations are known as micro-perforations and under chronic distress, the area becomes permeable to other criminals and the end product is dysbiosis or LEAKY GUT. So when we treat an HH (as we call the hiatal hernia), we check for all these things and may need to treat a patient for a number of digestive issues to get the whole scenario under control. You will see later on that there is a way to push the stomach down and therefore give the patient a tool to help relief the situation at home. Some chiropractors know how to push a hernia down and seeking out someone who can assist is a wise idea especially if your hernia is severe.

Leaky gut leads to other criminals invading the area. When there are three of the four present, the gut becomes fatigued, the lymph system congests and toxic debris from the criminals invades the bloodstream. This leads to AUTO-IMMUNE DISORDERS. Eg. Rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia and the like.

Spasms in the muscular intestinal tract can interfere with the production of digestive juices and enzymes and result in your food being fermented and not digested. This means the dreaded B & F disease, Belching and Farting. And that means GAS!!! = tiny bubbles of olfactory offensiveness!!!

HOW TO DEAL WITH A HIATAL HERNIA? SIMPLE … GET RID OF THE SPASM.

Sit on the front edge of a chair, slouch so your legs are stretched out in front of you, heels on the floor, your head on the back of the chair and your back bent towards the seat. So a severe slouch… Place the backs of your fingers together to form a point where the fingers touch. The fingers are about 90 degrees to the backs of your hands. Place the apex of the fingers, the third digits, just under the area where your breastbone ends in a small projection of cartilage. This is the xiphoid process and it acts like a relief valve. (The hiatal hernia has opened this valve too and allows pressure to move into the thoracic cavity and even into the head. This can make you feel air hungry (lots of yawning) or put you into a brain fog.) It can also cause upper back tension and pain.

Point your fingers into and then downward towards the rectum. DO NOT PUSH DIRECTLY DOWN TOWARD THE SPINE! Hold pressure towards the rectum while exhaling. Repeat and increase the pressure as you exhale and inhale 3 times in a row. On the fourth inhale, hold as much air in as possible and start pushing towards the rectum, at least 7 times, increasing the depth until your fingers cannot go any further. On the eighth push, exhale as hard as possible while your fingers continue to push. Rest for three minutes on the chair in a less slouched position.

Perform this procedure, a visceral self-correction, first thing in the morning, before lunch and supper and once more before bed. Be reasonable about the pressure you apply; you will know if you overdid it! Once you reduce the spasm, the diaphragm will need to be retrained. This is done by a specific breathing sequence called aerobic breathing. AEROBIC BREATHING Download.

There is also a yoga like exercise that can help strengthen the diaphragm. Lie on the ground on your back with your hands by your sides. Bend your knees so that your feet are flat on the floor. Slowly raise your buttocks off the ground so that your back is arched (head and shoulders should be on the floor). Hold for a few seconds and then gently roll your spine back to starting position. Repeat 10 times as often as you can but at least 3 x a day.

If you would like some one on one help with this really annoying problem, email cchs@shaw.ca and ask to do our very extensive online assessment called the Nutri-Q that can help us determine if there are any other factors behind your HH such as endocrine issues. If the pituitary isn’t communicating with the thyroid, then digestion can begin to go down-hill and could result in an HH. The NQ is modestly priced at $19.95. It is included in our in office consultations along with the Zyto Bio-Communication scan. If you are not in close proximity to our office, the NQ can be very revealing and worth doing. Go to our store on our website and you can purchase the NQ and we can then send you the login info to get started. Once we receive your submission, the NQ will be analyzed and recommendations made. This way we can make much more specific nutraceutical recommendations to correct the problem behind your HH. What You Probably Don’t Know About Breast Cancer Prevention

KOLBribbon

Upend the pink ribbon!

It’s breast cancer awareness month which I think is another ploy by big pharma to scare the living daylights out of everyone and sell more mammograms and drugs. Have to rant a bit you know:) Drowning in a sea of pink ribbons…being forced to have my hot beverage at my local co-op in a pink freaking cup!! I DO NOT want to contribute to the cancer foundation this month or ever. They don’t want a cure so supporting them is a crime. http://thinkbeforeyoupink.org/?p=2191 (Someone that has had breast cancer and feels the same way…yeah!) Check it out…it will make you think again. Sometimes we get on these band wagons and we don’t even know what’s behind it all. Another peeve…’Cops for Cancer’. Why are they ‘for’ it? Shouldn’t they be against it? Arggghhh!! It might just seem like semantics but think again. Here’s another link…http://womenwcancer.blogspot.ca/2011/09/upending-pink.html

So here’s our take on breast cancer and this is becoming much more known in the holistic health world. So down the road there will be more of this in the headlines. Here’s an excerpt from a Biotics newsletter for doctors and this is our stance as well. My particular comments are in italics.

‘One of the most important health concerns for women today is breast cancer. Statistics show approximately 1 in 7 women will get breast cancer. Those are scary odds. As clinicians, we can make a profound difference. In many cases, we can truly predict and prevent breast cancer; and we can monitor our progress.

Mammograms and early chemo cocktails are not our idea of prevention. Now everyone knows you don’t just wake up one day and find out you have breast cancer. Cancer growth is a process. It takes years before aberrant cells can accumulate to a point where we can feel or even detect a lump. Most women have no idea that they are exposed to something every day that can dramatically speed cancer growth, excess estrogen and estrogen mimics.

Take a further look further into the sources of these chemicals and how they get into our food and water supply so you can be more savvy. Check out the link below to Dr. Mercola’s chat with Dr. Christine Horner, author of ‘Waking the Warrior Goddess’. She has some good info and options for screening instead of mammograms.

Many of the pesticides and herbicides on our fruits and vegetables have estrogen like activity. The meats we eat are also increasing our estrogen levels. Animals are fed estrogen to increase their water weight before slaughter. One dramatic study demonstrating the effects of xenoestrogens in our drinking water found that male small mouth bass taken from a drinking water source actually had eggs in their testes. EGGS IN THEIR TESTES! These fish were harvested from a river that provides drinking water for millions of people.’

This isn’t the first story I’ve heard about xenoestrogens causing sexual deviances in animals so what’s it doing to humans. Sigh….

What are some other causes?…it isn’t just one thing but there can be bacteria, fungus, parasites and viruses behind cancer so that’s always a consideration. Future treatment methods for cancer will likely be identifying and eliminating one or more of the 4 criminals from a patient. Google Atavistic Therapy and Dr. Frank Arguello MD. He’s ahead of his time in this work.

What you can do….

Test for good/bad estrogen ratios– 2/16 Hydroxyestrone urine test is what to ask for.

Diet wise…here’s a few tips…eat at least 1 cup of cruciferous veggies per day. Arugula, bok choy, broccoflower, broccoli, broccoli rabe, broccoli romanesco, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, Chinese broccoli, Chinese cabbage, collards, cress, daikon, Ethiopian mustard, flowering cabbage greens, horseradish, kale, kohlrabi, mizuna, mustard greens, mustard seeds (brown, white & black), napa cabbage, radish, rutabaga, Siberian kale, tatsoi, turnip root, wasabi, watercress. In fact, this will increase your body’s ability to detoxify harmful liver agents like Tylenol by 20 %. Cruciferous veggies contain multiple nutrients with potent anti-cancer properties: diindolylmethane, sulforaphane, and selenium.

NitroGreens from Biotics contain sprouted cruciferous veg so if you can’t get enough in your diet then here’s a great way to supplement. The sprouted forms are even more potent than the raw or cooked forms. 1 scoop per day is an excellent prevention strategy. It also contains beet and carrot juices which have liver protecting abilities as well. NitroGreens have the alkalizing effect of the grasses.

Ground flax seeds are another good addition to your daily diet. They improve the 2/16 estrogen ratio. 2 tablespoons of ground up flax seeds on salad, in your NitroGreens shake or with the above mentioned cruciferous vegetables has been shown to improve the 2/16 hydroxyestrone ratio as well. That’s over and above what the veggies will accomplish.

Reduce pesticides, plastics and commercial meats (as mentioned, they feed animals estrogen to bulk their water weight up for slaughter-in other words heavier…more $$)

Optimal EFAs (Biotics) are a blend of ultra pure EPA, DHA, organic Flax seed oil, cancer fighting GLA, and a balance of the omega 9 oils. 2 to 3 capsules, 2 times per day will provide excellent protection.

Iodine is sorely lacking in our diet as are most minerals (poor soil management…mega farming don’t care if they replace the essential trace minerals). Read this to get a big shock about our food supply. Liquid Iodine Forte and Multi Mins from Biotics are a way to add iodine and minerals to your diet that you can’t get from food anymore. I wish this wasn’t the case but anyone that says I don’t need to supplement because I eat well should click on the link and read. It will open your eyes, believe me. Iodine protects breast, uterine, prostate and ovarian tissue and is extremely important to optimal endocrine function especially thyroid. Minerals give us our spark so if you wonder why so many people are on anti depressants this is one BIG reason why…way less minerals in our food supply than 30 to 40 years ago. One shocking example…100 years ago the old adage ‘An apple a day keeps the doctor away.’ had some truth. Almost 1/2 our daily need for iron came from one apple. Drum roll….today you would have to eat 26 apples to get the same amount!!! Agghhh!!! Is that not just criminal? We are starving to death yet fatter than we’ve ever been. Extreme measures are going to have to be taken if we are going to survive. It’s not plagues, war and pestilence that will wipe us out but food with no nutrients. We will get weaker and sicker and the rest is yours to speculate. Liquid Iodine Forte-30 drops per day or use a tableted form called Iodizyme- HP. Iodine levels can be assessed through a 24 hour urine collection for more precise protocols. Multi Mins 3 to 6 per day. More if you think you may be dehydrated…most of us are:( It’s minerals that hydrate us not drinking water devoid of minerals. Most tap and bottled water fall into this category.

Supplement with Vitamin D–Bio D Mulsion Forte (Biotics) (emulsified is important but know that not all are created equal-it must not separate. Poor quality emulsions will separate.)

Vitamin D has been shown to cut breast cancer incidence by 77 percent in four years! Of course, other lifestyle factors are also important in preventing cancer, such as nutrition, exercise, sleep, and managing stress. However, vitamin D’s critical importance seems to grow with every emerging study. Carole Baggerly, founder director of GrassrootsHealth—an organization dedicated to increasing awareness about vitamin D and the crucial role it plays in health—believes that as much as 90 percent of ordinary breast cancer is related to vitamin D deficiency, which is 100 percent preventable! Vitamin D levels can be tested. I use 2 drops per day most of the year because we live in a place where the sun isn’t very strong for the bulk of the time.

So here’s some info you might not have known and can now implement in your prevention program. We shouldn’t be scared but well informed and we need to stand up to the ‘politically correct’ dictocrats that are trying to keep us sick and rake in the cash. So speak up!

My Zyto Scan Story

zytoPeople are always curious as to how the Zyto computerized scan can work. So here’s a recent scenario that happened to me (Susan). I think you will find it interesting and it will help you understand how the path to health unfolds. See the video below also.

A couple of months ago I developed a rash on my chest. Unusual for me. So that morning I decided to run a scan and see what would turn up. It was my spleen that was screaming for help and that was a first for me. So later that day I asked my husband (Dr. Van Dueck aka Dr. DiffRANT) to test me with CRA (Contact Reflex Analysis). I didn’t mention the spleen at that time as he would look at the scan afterwards. Guess what showed up? Yep…spleen. So he explained that the spleen is a cleaner upper and it was overloaded and couldn’t get rid of the wastes and was putting them into my skin. So I rummaged around in our inventory and found a bottle of spleen. Yippee! A few days later the rash was gone, never to return.

So some time went by and I had a few issues with lack of minerals and calcium which I corrected. Then about a week ago, I started feeling a bit sluggish and just not quite myself. So yesterday I did a scan and I had 46 markers out. Only 2 products showed up as necessary and the first product on the list would bring back in 42 markers. It was Bio C 1000 from Biotics. So I asked my husband what he thought because spleen was again asking for help as well. He said don’t take spleen right now. He thought I may have an infection. So he tested with CRA and sure enough I have strep…probably in my lungs because I’ve been coughing a bit. So the spleen is trying to clean up the wastes from the infection. Since it is most likely subclinical, it isn’t a full blow horrible sore strep throat or anything like that. But it is sucking my energy and likely causing some minor upper back pain. I’m definitely not out of alignment so I suspect that it is my lungs causing the discomfort. So I embarked on taking 2 Bio C 1000 every 2 hours yesterday and the idea is to do that until you get loose bowels. So today that happened and now I can back off to the recommended dosage on the Zyto report. I’ll continue for a couple of weeks and get rechecked. Check out my scan. You will see that liver, thymus and spleen are troubled. These 3 organs are the immune system.

So the moral of this story is that you can be walking around with bacteria, fungus, parasites and viruses and not even know it. I’m very aware of when I’m not quite right. A lot of people don’t think much of it but you should because it can be dangerous. What do you think is a big part of the cause of …the big C (Yes, Cancer)? Well, staph is what generally causes cysts and tumours. Fungus is another big possible cause. Cancer doesn’t just happen. There has to be a cause. And it isn’t just cancer, other diseases get started due to these buggies taking over. So I’m suggesting you pay attention to the little things so they don’t become big things that are hard or next to impossible to reverse.

I’ll take you back in my life a bit to give you an idea why I may be susceptible to bacteria and why I really keep an eye on that. When I was 7, I went into the hospital for a few days for tests. They couldn’t find anything wrong with me but I know now that I was likely already having thyroid issues (they are in our family). I have since learned how to keep that problem in check but at the time it was causing me to not want to do much physical activity and that was getting me into trouble in gym class.

After I got out of hospital, I had a big ugly boil on my leg. I still remember that thing…huge and full of pus. I know gross! BUT what is a boil caused from? Staph infection. Yes, the best place to get staph is the hospital so thanks to my little stay I came out with a problem that would haunt me for years. What happened next?

Well, a couple of years later I spent the entire summer on my stomach. I guess I was around 9 at the time. I had horrid weeping sores all over my butt. The doctor, Dr. Joint (yes that was his real name and his partner in his office was Dr. Aiken-seriously) had no idea what to do about it. He gave my Mum some special soap and that was about it. It went away eventually (in time for school).

During the next year or so we moved from Ontario to BC and the staph moved with me. We were in a town of 2000 people and I was the only one to get impetigo (staph). I also had styes (staph). I had horrible colds with great big swollen lymph nodes on my neck (staph). It happened so frequently that one of them has never been the size it should be since. It isn’t infected anymore but stretched out of shape. I also had a weird pimply condition on my face. It wasn’t like regular acne and that went on into my 20s.

Eventually I went to UBC and I still suffered from the horrible colds and some skin issues. Finally I met my husband when I was 29 and a couple of years into our relationship, he went to a CRA (Contact Reflex Analysis) seminar in the US. He came back enthralled and started using CRA in the office. I got tested regularly and after clearing up a few things, lo and behold, staph infection showed up. So then I understood my plight all that time. I began the program from Standard Process which consisted of Thymex (to boost the immune system) and Antronex (to clean up the wastes as the staph died off). It was a 3 month program and near the end of that time I remember standing looking in a cupboard for something and I felt an odd tingling and suddenly it popped into my head that I was finally free of it. It was strange because it had been with me most of my life. I had always had this peculiar obsession with Hodgkins Disease so I think my intuition was telling me that if I didn’t get rid of this thing that I was headed in that direction. So since then, all those symptoms and issues I had are gone.

So please pay attention and save yourself the grief I went through. I’m so thankful for the techniques my husband has learned over the years. I’m sure they and he saved my life.
