Hiatal Hernia and IBS

hiatal_hernia_hiatal_herniaThink about this for a moment … your esophagus, stomach and intestines, your entire intestinal tract from mouth to anus; is really the same muscle.

It is just shaped differently along the way to deal with specific digestive duties!!! And because of this, your guts are not internal, but external anatomy, open to the outside environment. (This also applies to your nose, throat and lungs; they too are connected to the outside environment.)

How do muscles react to irritation? They SPASM. A spasm is a contraction or shortening of muscle length. As this muscle, your intestinal tract, shortens, it pulls up into the diaphragm. This forces the top valve of the stomach, the cardiac valve, to open and allow hydrochloric acid to reflux up from your stomach into your esophagus. This creates “heartburn” and chronic sore throat. It probably started years ago with belching, burping, nausea and even vomiting.

***It’s not necessarily true that your stomach is making too much acid, it’s because bile is irritating your stomach so much that acid is leaking up out of your stomach. So taking antacids is not a good idea and if fact will likely make the situation worse over time. Most people do not have enough stomach acid but that’s another story.

If your diaphragm should weaken, slacken or even tear, the spasm can force the stomach up through the diaphragm into the chest cavity. This is called a HIATAL HERNIA. (At birth, this is referred to as a hiatus hernia, in older age it is called a bell-pulsion esophageal hernia; both require surgery). A hiatal hernia can interfere with breathing (sleep apnea) and even cause heart attack-like symptoms. The hernia can force more acid from your stomach, especially when you are lying down or bending over. Don’t do a lot of bending over after eating as this can send your stomach into spasm and give you grief.

Note: Surgery for hiatal hernias is not usually very successful and can even make it worse. As a result of the hiatal hernia, secretions of toxic bile weaken the duodenal membrane and make it susceptible to Helicobacter pylori. I call this the helicopter bacteria, because it comes from houseflies. Once inside you, your immune system recognizes it as a criminal (one of the 4 criminals; bacteria, fungus, parasite and the super criminal, I call the terrorist, the virus). This criminal bacteria, H. pylori, uses ammonia to neutralize stomach acid, so it can get a foothold under your mucous membrane. Once spotted by the immune soldiers, H. pylori are attacked and the resulting fight produces gastritis and eventually ulceration. Small ulcerations are known as micro-perforations and under chronic distress, the area becomes permeable to other criminals and the end product is dysbiosis or LEAKY GUT. So when we treat an HH (as we call the hiatal hernia), we check for all these things and may need to treat a patient for a number of digestive issues to get the whole scenario under control. You will see later on that there is a way to push the stomach down and therefore give the patient a tool to help relief the situation at home. Some chiropractors know how to push a hernia down and seeking out someone who can assist is a wise idea especially if your hernia is severe.

Leaky gut leads to other criminals invading the area. When there are three of the four present, the gut becomes fatigued, the lymph system congests and toxic debris from the criminals invades the bloodstream. This leads to AUTO-IMMUNE DISORDERS. Eg. Rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia and the like.

Spasms in the muscular intestinal tract can interfere with the production of digestive juices and enzymes and result in your food being fermented and not digested. This means the dreaded B & F disease, Belching and Farting. And that means GAS!!! = tiny bubbles of olfactory offensiveness!!!

HOW TO DEAL WITH A HIATAL HERNIA? SIMPLE … GET RID OF THE SPASM.

Sit on the front edge of a chair, slouch so your legs are stretched out in front of you, heels on the floor, your head on the back of the chair and your back bent towards the seat. So a severe slouch… Place the backs of your fingers together to form a point where the fingers touch. The fingers are about 90 degrees to the backs of your hands. Place the apex of the fingers, the third digits, just under the area where your breastbone ends in a small projection of cartilage. This is the xiphoid process and it acts like a relief valve. (The hiatal hernia has opened this valve too and allows pressure to move into the thoracic cavity and even into the head. This can make you feel air hungry (lots of yawning) or put you into a brain fog.) It can also cause upper back tension and pain.

Point your fingers into and then downward towards the rectum. DO NOT PUSH DIRECTLY DOWN TOWARD THE SPINE! Hold pressure towards the rectum while exhaling. Repeat and increase the pressure as you exhale and inhale 3 times in a row. On the fourth inhale, hold as much air in as possible and start pushing towards the rectum, at least 7 times, increasing the depth until your fingers cannot go any further. On the eighth push, exhale as hard as possible while your fingers continue to push. Rest for three minutes on the chair in a less slouched position.

Perform this procedure, a visceral self-correction, first thing in the morning, before lunch and supper and once more before bed. Be reasonable about the pressure you apply; you will know if you overdid it! Once you reduce the spasm, the diaphragm will need to be retrained. This is done by a specific breathing sequence called aerobic breathing. AEROBIC BREATHING Download.

There is also a yoga like exercise that can help strengthen the diaphragm. Lie on the ground on your back with your hands by your sides. Bend your knees so that your feet are flat on the floor. Slowly raise your buttocks off the ground so that your back is arched (head and shoulders should be on the floor). Hold for a few seconds and then gently roll your spine back to starting position. Repeat 10 times as often as you can but at least 3 x a day.
