Stress & the Adrenal Glands-A VERY Common Problem

We were at a seminar a while back and the doctor teaching said, “Whenever you see a thyroid patient, always check adrenals and bowel as one of the underlying causes.”

He went on to say that when the adrenals are over-stimulated, the body will try to compensate via the hypothalamus-pituitary axis and ultimately affects the thyroid. In other words, it’s like the brakes are being applied to the thyroid. That’s why some patients are given thyroid medication or supplementation and feel great for a few months or even years but ultimately will return to their prior hypothyroid status.

Recently we saw some research on Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and it stated that one of the key principles to fix the thyroid is to address the adrenals. Increased cortisol can tilt the delicately balanced TH1/TH2 immune regulation. It also said that when someone sees their doctor for severe dermatitis or an inflammatory condition the usual and customary medical treatment is to give prednisone to reset the immune system. The research suggested that resetting the adrenals by using adaptogenic botanicals, like the ones in the Biotics product ADHS would be a wise step to take.

So why are the adrenals and other endocrine glands not happy? People are under more emotional, physical, and mental pressures than we can imagine. Just because people don’t always express this doesn’t mean they are not experiencing it. If you listen close to conversations wherever you go, people are talking about being overwhelmed, exhausted, stretched to their limits, pushed at work, and relationships are strained. Remember stress comes in the form of chemical stress, mechanical stress, thermal stress, and emotional stress. And if you think a big workout will help…think again…If you have adrenal stress, too much exercise can be your downfall. Keep to light exercise and wait to get your adrenals back on track before signing up for a marathon.

Stress has a powerful effect on hormones. It can increase cortisol and catecholamines, decrease gonadotropins and sex hormones. Stress has also been correlated to reductions in TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) and the conversion of T4 (correlates thyroid to heart) T3 (thyroid to kidneys). Also, the effects of stress can be seen in the increase of tissue resistance to hormones like T3, estrogen, androgens, insulin, and even cortisol.

The list of symptoms or conditions frequently associated with impaired adrenal function is too long to list. I will attach a questionnaire with a list of symptoms and you can see how it stacks up for yourself. They range from dizziness to depression, apprehension to auto-immune disease, inability to concentrate to the inability to hold adjustments, double mindedness, twitching muscles and pain along the lower rib line. If the thyroid is suffering due to the adrenals failing there’s another list of symptoms that can be involved…referred pain in the left shoulder, for instance. If you have ever had something like that occur and have gone to a chiropractor for help, you will find that the adjustments will be a waste of time as the pain is referred and not a true structural problem.

There are some simple in office tests that can be performed to assess adrenal insufficiency. So if you think that you may fit this category, book an advanced scan and we will see if this what’s causing your ills. With some changes in diet and a nutraceutical program to ‘reset’ the adrenals, you can be on the road to recovery.

How do we treat the problem?…to start with we use only high quality nutraceuticals from Biotics Research, Standard Process and there are other great nutraceutical companies too. These products are sold by health care professionals so be wary if you see them online as they may not be what you think…another story!! Health food store products have nowhere near the strength to treat these kind of conditions

We may have to begin with a big boost to the adrenals with a pure adrenal glandular. Then we would move into using the adaptagen adrenal support that was mentioned earlier which is herbal (ADHS). We would likely support the Pituitary/Hypothalamus as well with a glandular. The thyroid would be supported with an amino, L-Tyrosine. L-Tyrosine is the synthetic form of a naturally occurring amino acid produced to stimulate thyroxine, the hormone produced by the thyroid gland. The body needs the amino acid Tyrosine for many functions. It is especially important in thyroid performance, and a lack of L-Tyrosine in the diet can create hypothyroid conditions.

It is also important to support the blood sugar and remove starches and sugars as much as possible from the diet. One of the reasons the adrenal glands become over reactive (and thus worn out) is to alkalize an overly acidic condition. By increasing the foods which have natural buffers and which have an alkaline ash will assist the process. It is essential that patients reduce their refined carbohydrate load (see sugar handling diet below) and increase their water ounces intake to 1/2 their body weight (200 lbs=100 oz/day). Make sure you add a squeeze of lime or lemon to your water the assist absorption.

We may also use Gammanol if there are muscular issues involved. Gammanol Forte with FRAC from Biotics supports muscles, hormones and the GI.

We wouldn’t necessarily do all of this with all clients as each case varies. Also, doses vary from person to person so don’t try to do this without guidance from a professional.

Hypoadrenia Protocol

1. Cytozyme AD or ADB5+ 6-12 per day before 4:00 for 28 days or as recommended by practitioner. After this period change to…
2. ADHS 2×2 (2am and 2 noon)
3. Cytozyme PT/HPT 3 to 6 per day
4. Glucobalance 3 to 9 per day
5. L-Tyrosine 3 to 6 per day
6. If muscle issues/can’t hold adjustments 3 to 6 Gammanol Forte per day

Sugar Control Diet

The following is a trial diet, designed to help recalibrate your bodies sugar control mechanisms, it will increase your energy and vitality. Please follow it very closely. It is not a healthy diet for all times, but it is beneficial for you during this trial period. As your condition improves, your health care practitioner may add back foods to your diet. This way of eating does take a little planning, but is well worth the effort. Most people will lose many of their unhealthy cravings within one or two weeks on this diet. Many who need to loose weight are pleased to find weight loss while on this diet, without being hungry. Others who need to gain weight often find weight return without undue effort.

PROTEIN: Each meal should include minimum 4 to 6 ounces of protein, but you can have as much as you desire. Meat, poultry, fish, and eggs are unlimited. Vegetarians may use soy and tofu items where no allergy exists. This is not ideal as soy isn’t the best for us but if you need to boost protein temporarily with soy then do so or ask us about Biotics Pea Protein Isolate.

VEGETABLES: Eat as much as you desire, you can’t eat too much here. Focus on dark leafy greens, and a variety of colors. No potatoes, yams, or other starchy vegetables.

FRUITS: Careful here, only to be eaten alone between meals as a snack. Leave the sweeter fruits such as bananas, mangoes, persimmons, papayas, dried fruits, etc. alone. One or two pieces of fruit per day should be plenty.

NUTS: Raw nuts, especially raw cashews make a great snack.

GRAINS: No wheat including breads, rolls, muffins and pasta. Only grain allowed is rice, and only at the evening meal. All rice should be roasted first before cooking. Place dry uncooked rice in pan and brown, some of the kernels will pop. Then cook as normal.

DAIRY: No dairy, unless specifically allowed by your doctor.

SWEETENERS: No sweeteners of any kind.

FATS: No artificial fats such as hydrogenated, or partially hydrogenated.

You must eat every 2 hours of the waking day. You need not eat a large volume of food at these snacks, just a fist full of nuts or a carrot or apple or something. No processed or packaged foods, eat only those foods as found in nature. Eat some vegetables raw every day such as salad, unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

Remember this is temporary. After this, a more well rounded approach can be followed like a vegetable based Paleo diet heavy on the raw food. Please ask us about this approach.

Christmas Stress

Yes, it’s here again. Likely the most stressful time of the year. Why? Well, we can only speculate but often our finances are stretched, there’s a lot of social activities that press our time meaning less sleep and downtime, the consumption of too much food and food that isn’t good for us and so on. One other thing is that where we live (Vancouver area) it means less light at this time of the year which is tough on many of us. Some people experience SADS (Seasonal Affective Disorder) which among other symptoms can cause depression. So what do we do about this? Understanding how your body reacts to all this will help to reveal a solution. So here’s the story…And I have borrowed some of the explanation from Dr. Bob De Maria who is connected with Biotics Research our ‘go to’ nutraceutical company.

How would you like to be one of two paired glands in the body that most people think are totally insignificant and it is suggested have minimal or no significant purpose? The adrenal glands would fit the description of that commentary. Are you tired? Have you ever heard someone say, “I was only picking up my socks or a pencil; something insignificantly light and my back went “out”. The adrenal glands are your back up hormone system in the body creating the ingredients for strong ligaments and tissue. You may not realize that what you eat (sugar) and how you perceive challenges (stress) have the potential to exhaust or fatigue adrenal function. Waking up worn-out and experiencing pain with trivial actions is two of the most common body signals of “adrenal fatigue”. I know this first hand…my adrenals were stressed recently from doing a lot more physical work that I wasn’t used to and this went on for about 3 months. 2 months into it bam! I felt like there was a hole through my mid back to my chest. Very annoying and chiropractic adjustments didn’t help. So sure enough I tested for hypoadrenania and so I supplemented with Cytozyme AD and after a couple of weeks the symptoms went away.

Adrenal exhaustion is rampant in our society today. We ask you these questions – does bright light bother your eyes, do you get dizzy from a sit to a stand position – do you crave salt (chips, pickles and olives), twitching below the eye or in other muscles? If it’s a yes, you can almost be guaranteed you are in the later stages of adrenal gland impairment. Rest and minimizing commitments requiring full attention of adrenal function is absolutely necessary to achieve optimal adrenal function.

A little known fact by most is the steroids used and created by the adrenal get their basing structure from cholesterol. You may have been on cholesterol meds for years and still contend with annoying high cholesterol numbers. Cholesterol is created in the cascade of the hormonal function to either end up as cortisone, progesterone and or one of many other “adrenal” corticoids. We would suggest if you have long term or “stubborn” cholesterol levels that do not want to drop even with spectacular diet changes – always question stress. Stress and sugar from our observation are the two leading factors increasing ones cholesterol and sabotaging optimal adrenal function. Add red, yellow or orange Bell peppers to the diet, avoid sugar and we also encourage more protein with each meal. We recommend adrenal glandulars and other supplementation to support adrenal restoration.
